I know I see more positive reports than negative one when it comes to Hasbro Pulse. Still, JTA reader Jason A.’s recent delivery of The Black Series [Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary] POTF2 (one of their worst exclusives ever) arrived shoved into an ill-fitted box by their shipping department. This has been the norm for me. I’ve literally had better encounters with Walmart’s shipping than Hasbro Pulse. Oh well.

Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step. Today we assess Luke Skywalker: X-Wing Pilot.

If you were actively collecting during the fabulous The Original Trilogy Collection in 2004, you’re aware that Hasbro introduced the first “Vintage Kenner” carded figures, much to the excitement and amazement of the entire Star Wars collecting community. The Hasbro team back then realized the importance of the 1978 Star Wars toy line and the main characters that should be part of it. When choosing four characters for placement on the replica 1978 STAR WARS cards, Hasbro wisely chose Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi. These four main heroes are synonymous with the Star Wars branding. The modern counterparts started a fire in collectors to see every original Kenner figure updated in vintage Kenner packaging. So why are these four characters still conspicuously absent from The Vintage Collection after eight active years? (more….)

Welcome to our new column entitled The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six. Hasbro recently made a commitment to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that for every classic Kenner figure, there needs a modern counterpart. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done and we’ll figure out where we are step by step.

We’re right in alignment with Hasbro in our vintage Kenner database. There are 21 figures under the STAR WARS banner, 29 figures under THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK banner, 31 figures under the RETURN OF THE JEDI banner, and 15 figures under THE POWER OF THE FORCE banner. (Sy Snootles, Max Rebo, Droopy McCool, and Blue Snaggletooth brings the number to an even 100 figures.)

Read our assessment, and then be sure to add your thoughts into the comments. Let us know if you agree or disagree. If you’re a customizer, show us your custom definitive figure in the comments as well! Who knows? It might give Hasbro some ideas.

Sebastian Stan Would Play Luke Skywalker If....

Actor Sebastian Stan, whom most of you probably know from his Marvel movies in which he portrays “Bucky Barnes” aka “The Winter Soldier”, has been a fan favorite to play a young Luke Skywalker for years. Quite a few fans think Stan looks a lot like a young Mark Hamill and would be a perfect fit to play a young(er) Luke. While on his PR tour for the new Disney+ series “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” Stan appeared on Good Morning America where he was directly confronted with the question if he would play Luke Skywalker. And Sebastian Stan would be up for it, but only if Mark Hamill gave his blessing.

If Mark Hamill called me, personally, to tell me he feels inclined to share this role with me, then I will believe it. Until then, I won’t believe it.

Hamill would certainly give his blessing though, so this no real hurdle. The real question is if Lucasfilm would want a Luke Skywalker project. And what could that project be? Click through for some speculation!

He would totally do it. Yes, he would!

Reminder That Funko Continues To Give Fans What They Want

This has been revealed earlier this week (on Yahoo Entertainment), but I’d still like to point out that once again Funko is not only the first to market, but also the first and only company to even have the figures at all: Jedi Training Luke and Leia from the The Rise of Skywalker flashback scene. Opinions about the movie may be divided, but almost anyone would agree that the third sequel was the most toyetic of the three episodes. And even though sequel based merchandise does not necessarily sell like hot cakes, I would think that OT based figures from a flashback scene might find a lot of fans, no matter the scale, of course this could be released in both lines. Who wouldn’t want a Jedi Knight Leia and Jedi Master Luke in their prime on the shelf?
Would you want these two figures at least from The Rise of Skywalker, or do you think Hasbro should forget the sequels altogether and focus on The Mandalorian and missing OT/PT figures instead, provided there are only so many release slots and the number of figures each year is rather limited?

If you rewind your mind 16 years, the first wave of The Original Trilogy Collection “vintage-styled” action figures began showing up and brick and mortar right around this time. It blows my mind that sixteen years later, we STILL don’t have any of the first four figures from the line launch updated in The Vintage Collection yet. Hopefully, with Hasbro’s new directive of completing the “Kenner 96,” these four figures including Luke Skywalker Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi should be the focus of Hasbro’s concentration. Could you imagine if they revealed all four of these on a Fan First Friday? The 3.75″ super-articulated collecting community might go a full year without complaining. Hasbro, these are LONG overdue. Please get them updated!

Isn’t the HyperReal line supposed to give collectors realistic interpretations of on-screen characters? Then why does Luke Skywalker look more like a 5″ Galaxy of Adventures figure instead? Thank the Maker we won’t be seeing any more of these. See why this figure is a disappointment. (more….)

1978 STAR WARS Luke Skywalker Redux: Trilogo Update

In 1984, a new packaging design of Star Wars packaging was introduced for the European market. A cost containment initiative, the new packaging sported three languages of the Return Of The Jedi logo for a “one size fits all” approach. Although a “three-logo” design was created for The Power Of The Force line (as evidenced on some ‘boxed’ toys), it wasn’t carried over to the basic figure line’s card design. They continued to use the three Return Of The Jedi logos instead. Although the word “Trilogo” is found nowhere on the packaging, the term is universally adopted by all collectors to describe this line of figures.

Today we revisit Luke Skywalker. Luke Skywalker’s Trilogo card art features an alternate “gunner station” image used for the running change American Return Of The Jedi figure. The review’s Collector Notes are updated with this information. See the full card art and additional notes by revisiting 1978’s STAR WARS Luke Skywalker figure HERE.
