Is TVC Giving Us More Original Trilogy "Love" Than We Realize?

If you’re a George Lucas-era Star Wars fan and collector, you likely feel that the whole IP is insufferable under Disney. Don’t worry; we’re not going down that path here. However, the focus of Disney Star Wars has affected Hasbro’s toy line the most. But as I looked back since the re-launch of The Vintage Collection in March of 2018, I realized that Hasbro did an admirable job of getting many characters from The Empire Strikes Back out to collectors, including MANY I never anticipated we’d see in the modern line. Get ready for more aggravation. The Walmart exclusive “The Ninety Six” figures are clearly for carded collectors looking to have a modern counterpart to the original vintage Kenner run of Star Wars action figures. But once again, they’re are arriving in padded envelopes, and most samples are being reported and “severely damaged,” ours included. How difficult is it to code these items as collectibles so they can guarantee they get packed in a box instead of a flimsy envelope? Let us know of your arrivals.

The Vintage Collection Bespin Security Guard (Helder Spinoza) is the best figure of 2022, and we say that knowing it has imperfections and is 50% reused parts. And it’s hard to believe we waited 42 years for the FIRST modern counterpart to the classic 1980 The Empire Strikes Back vintage Kenner release. It’s like waiting for a new ABBA record. But it’s finally here, and it’s divine. (more….)

Welcome to another entry in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column. Hasbro recently committed to collectors that they will be “focusing” on characters in The Vintage Collection that fall under “The Ninety Six” banner. If you’re new to this, it means that there needs a modern counterpart for every classic Kenner figure. Between 2020 and 2021, Hasbro’s made an admirable effort by focusing on these characters. But there is more work to be done, and we’ll figure out where we are step by step. Today we assess Squid Head.

We are looking at SE7EN new 3.75-inch The Vintage Collection action figures! The Vintage Collection Death Star Droid epitomizes “bittersweetness.” It’s so nice to see this figure in vintage Kenner packaging, but it’s a lousy action figure based on a Kenner figure instead of the on-screen character. We are looking at SE7EN new 3.75-inch The Vintage Collection action figures! If you can forgive the shortcomings of Luke Skywalker (Endor), you’ll quickly discover that Hasbro developed an excellent action figure from existing and new parts for your collection. The new head sculpt is astounding, even if the dang helmet doesn’t come off of the head! (more….)

We are looking at SE7EN new 3.75-inch The Vintage Collection action figures! It only took 15 YEARS and MULTIPLE re-releases for Hasbro to update the 2006 VTSC Sand People action figure. And Hasbro’s press images of the updated release had collectors worried as it left a lot to be desired. We’re happy to report, however, that The Vintage Collection Tusken Raider is a pleasant surprise with a new portrait and new arms with enhanced articulation. And while imperfect, it takes the lead by quite a bit! We’re certain you’re going to like this one a lot! (more….)

Hopefully, Hasbro is aware of the pure satisfaction The Vintage Collection community felt with their “I Am Your Father’s Day” presentation.  After one product presentation full of repacks after another, the TVC crowd was growing weary with anger. We’re not sure what changed, but Hasbro provided a good balance of modern Disney Star Wars Entertainment with incredible announcements of character from the Original Trilogy, the way things always should be when it comes to this collection. Because the last presentation even excited us, we put together a quick list (all featured below) of six The Vintage Collection figure ideas they should either reveal or announce as part of the “pipeline” to keep that TVC fan engagement alive and well and with energetic momentum.

Hasbro, would you kindly announce/reveal Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead), 2-1B, 8D8, Tessek (Squid Head), Amanaman, or EV-9D9 as the next characters we can expect in The Vintage Collection? We guarantee you that any of these figures would continue that thunderous applause you received at the last event. Keep these developments alive and well for The Vintage Collection. Thank you. If you’re a reader, be sure to list who you want to see that makes you happy too.

We’re getting lots of traffic in our The Vintage Collection: The Ninety Six column, and we believe it will be the definitive source to determine where we are with Hasbro and the completion of the original 96 vintage Kenner figures updated to definitive modern status. We just finished up the first 12 STAR WARS figures, and we’re preparing for the 1979 STAR WARS figures next, including Boba Fett! As you know, JTA was known for our Vintage Vs. Modern Special Reports, but without years of Original Trilogy characters produced in 3.75-inch scale, there was little reason to continue them. Now that Hasbro has a focus to complete the Kenner Ninety Six, we’re eagerly on board to see what they do with the line. We also received some feedback from readers to help this experience be a little easier to navigate. Click through for more!

We’re right in alignment with Hasbro in our vintage Kenner database. There are 21 figures under the STAR WARS banner, 29 figures under THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK banner, 31 figures under the RETURN OF THE JEDI banner, and 15 figures under THE POWER OF THE FORCE banner. (Sy Snootles, Max Rebo, Droopy McCool, and Blue Snaggletooth brings the number to an even 100 figures.)

Read our assessment, and then be sure to add your thoughts into the comments. Let us know if you agree or disagree. If you’re a customizer, show us your custom definitive figure in the comments as well! Who knows? It might give Hasbro some ideas.
