The Acolyte Has A Tentative Release Date

Collider has learned that the tentative release date for The Acolyte is June 5th 2024. This would be about a month after the 3rd and final season of The Bad Batch concludes. We have yet to see an official trailer for the show, because the footage shown at Celebration in 2023 was never officially released to the public, only leaked videos with very bad quality exist. So I wonder when the marketing and promo work will begin if the series is really coming to Disney+ in just a little over three months from now. I would expect Lucasfilm and Disney trying to ramp up hype soon. Click through for more!

The Acolyte has eight episodes with one episode released per week. My own feeling is that The Acolyte could very well be the “Madame Web” or “The Marvels” moment for Star Wars, it will likely be more successful than the latest Marvel series “Echo”, which had extremely low ratings even with all five episodes released on the same day (and then disappeared from the charts after one week), but generally speaking outside of Barbie female driven entertainment, especially in the SciFi or fantasy genre, has not done too well in the recent past, in fact, with Madame Web, Wish, The Marvels and Echo several high profile female centric projects have failed in the past few months and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon on Netflix was lambasted by both critics and audiences. Ahsoka however did ok, even outperforming Loki season 2 for much of its run on Disney+. So maybe Star Wars can buck the trend once again.

It will be interesting to see if a show based on the High Republic book series (as far as setting is concerned and one or two characters) hardly anyone reads (according to Circana who track sales of various things in the US) will enjoy any success.

The series is certainly fighting somewhat of an uphill battle, given that the showrunner and head writer, the former assistant of Harvey Weinstein, Leslye Headland, is maybe not the most popular person and not helped at all by some statements made by Headland and involved actors that all emphasize a certain race/gender/sexuality angle. That being said Headland’s Netflix series “Russian Doll” about a female game developer who goes through a somewhat morbid time loop she has to solve (she repeatedly dies) was pretty well received and liked by audiences. So there is certainly a chance The Acolyte may be really good and surprise us all. Are you looking forward to the series or will you at least give it a fair chance and check out the premiere… or are you convinced it will be an unmitigated disaster and ignore it outright?
