2009 marked the first time
in recent memory that Gentle Giant LTD was not in attendance at the New York International
Toy Fair. There are rumors and rumbling
abound about the state of things at Gentle Giant. But although the company
did not have any of their staff in attendance, they were represented by Diamond,
who distributes their products to specialty shops. They also later provided
an official set of pictures of their 2009 offerings, which were much more encouraging. Click
here to see them.
As a result of Gentle Giant passing along the responsibility of exhibiting their line to Diamond, we are currently unable to report important details like the edition sizes of some of these limited edition collectibles. Here is the Gentle Giant product that Diamond had on display:
CLONE WARS MAQUETTES
Gentle Giant has taken their animated maquette concept and applied it to the designs from the new CLONE WARS animated series. The new maquettes are roughly the same size as the previous animated maquettes that were stylized like the designs from the Clone Wars micro series. So what was on display?
Obi-Wan Kenobi – Available Spring '09 (MSRP $90)
Count Dooku – Available Summer '09 (MSRP $95)
The popular mini-bust line has seen some recent revelations by way of Gentle Giant's recent YouTube video , and it seems to be taking on a Hoth theme with both Rebels and Imperials in their cold weather Hoth gear. There was only one of these pieces on display at the Diamond booth, but here are the details.
Luke Skywalker – Hoth – Available Summer '09 (MSRP $55)
HIGH END BRONZE
Gentle Giant seems to be venturing more into the high end collectible market with two bronze pieces that are intended for a select audience. The price point will be extremely prohibitive.
bronze statue – Available Spring '09 (MSRP $1,001) – This statue is similar
in stature to the previously issued THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Yoda statue.
But the materials have changed as has the sculpting style.
Obi-Wan Kenobi bronze bust – Available Summer '09 (MSRP $1,500) – This bust stands approximately 6" tall and is a hooded likeness of old Ben Kenobi. The sculpt is somewhat reminiscent of the styling of the Jedi Archive's Lost 20 busts from ATTACK OF THE CLONES
