We weren’t sure how we’d receive Woody Harrelson in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but he ended becoming one of the most interesting characters in the film. A great character actor, Woody Harrelson embraced the attitude and demeanor of Tobias Beckett, one of the smugglers (thieves) in the newest Star Wars Entertainment. Looking much like a cowboy in space, Tobias Beckett led his gang through various missions which involved thievery and subterfuge. And it was on Vandor-1 where they scored a trainload of coaxium, one of the most prosperous and important materials in the galaxy. What’s strange about the toy aspect of his character is that Hasbro didn’t add him to the basic Force Link 2.0 line until the fourth wave. Most of the leading characters didn’t enter the line until wave 4 which is more than six months out from the release of the film (which faltered at the box office by the way). But ever resilient, the average Star Wars collector will buy new figures on sight, so perhaps the figures arriving late is of little consequence. The Tobias Beckett Force Link 2.0 figure is nicely done. It isn’t perfect, and we will go through his hits and misses in great detail. The good news is that the figure looks a great deal like actor Woody Harrelson, and that is always a major plus when it comes to action figures and Star Wars collectors.

Tobias Beckett has a great sculpt. Hasbro captured the detail in the face and his outfit perfectly. And it is another example in the case that Hasbro can make stunning 3.75” action figures. Sadly, Tobias Beckett has an awkward lean. This balance issue has more to with the lack of flatness tooled into the feet than anything else. If you’re not careful, he will easily fall backward. And many times you have to bend him forward to prevent him from falling. We’re sure that this will vary a bit from sample to sample, but we have experienced some stress while shooting him for our photo gallery because he refuses to stay standing. Hasbro tooled a separate and removable jacket shell. As with any figure designed this way, removing the shell is pointless because the sleeves don’t match the undershirt. But the approach to sculpting the shell separately adds a layering effect that gets missed on figures that don’t have this approach. So, we’re happy that Hasbro decided to expend a little more money to get Tobias Beckett right. Also, his belt has two holsters that fit the unique guns he carries around with him. When fully assembled, Tobias Beckett looks straight out of the film. We’re impressed with the final results as a simple action figure, but there are still some areas that Hasbro should focus their attention on to make the figures as great as they can.

The guns included with Tobias Beckett are different from each other, as they should be. Hasbro also designed the holsters so that one is specific to the first gun and the other holster is specific to the second gun. What’s more, Tobias Beckett holds each gun with a firm grasp, thanks to the excellent design of his hands. Tobias Beckett comes with nine points of articulation. The inclusion of two swivel wrists and two swivel boots pushes the action figure beyond the 5POA framework that has been the standard for the line since 2013 now. A figure like Tobias Beckett would have benefited from hinge-jointed or ball-jointed knees. He is a top-heavy action figure and changing the direction of his legs could counterbalance the figure to prevent him from falling over all of the time. Tobias Beckett is also perfectly scaled for the Star Wars [Solo] line. He looks great next to his comrades like Val (Mimban) and Rio Durant. And he looks even better in the Vandor-1 Heist playset. Aside from a dreadfully painted face, Tobias Beckett is a nice-looking action figure, especially for what it is: 5POA. We’re slowly but surely getting all of the main characters from Solo: A Star Wars Story. But we believe it’s high time that Hasbro starts focusing on some aliens to provide the much-needed alien diversity that most pre-Disney Star Wars lines before it had. Also, how about some Wookiee and droid slaves too? The possibilities are endless.
