A Sith lord trained by the evil Darth Sidious, Darth Maul is a formidable warrior and scheming mastermind.

When it comes to action figures, Darth Maul isn’t all that different from Darth Vader. Because each time a Darth Maul action figure is released, new or previously released, it sells like crazy because of the love and devotion for and to the character. So, you might expect us to complain about another re-released version of Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) for the Galaxy Of Adventures line, but we probably won’t. As long as there is a Star Wars toy line, there will be another Darth Maul action figure. For years and years, Hasbro released and re-released the Darth Maul figure from 1999’s EI Sith Speeder And Darth Maul vehicle set. And we saw the figure reenter the line a decade after its original release. Hasbro isn’t doing anything that much different with the Galaxy Of Adventures Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) action figure with miniature comic. A significant repaint of 2014’s SW [DV/ROTS] Darth Maul (SL15) figure. Each release of this version of Darth Maul came with deco issues in one way or another. This time, Hasbro opts for a more maroon shade of red (a darker color) to give Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) his signature look. The figure looks decent, but we won’t go so far to say it’s a flawless version of Darth Maul. It’s far from perfect, but the figure has a nice sculpt and decent likeness. But it’s not a perfect likeness.

In the past, this sculpt of Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) came with terrible paint operations. The tattooed details on Darth Maul’s face, in particular, were extremely muddy and sloppy, and the haphazard detail given to his horns made Darth Maul look terrible. Now, Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) looks a little better for the Galaxy Of Adventures line. Innate in the sculpting, there is something about the portrait that makes it impossible for us to despise this action figure. Even Darth Maul’s ears, which stick out in a pronounced fashion, can’t make us dislike this figure too much. There is a lot of room for Darth Maul to grow of course, but Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) possesses a fine sculpt. Interestingly, he is tooled in a walking motion, with one foot in front of the other to mimic walking or a simple stride. Of course, this once again limits how many diverse positions you can pose him in, but the details in the sculpt make you forget most of the figure’s flaws. Also, keep in mind that this is an action figure with only five points of articulation. Thankfully, Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) succeeds because of his overall stature (from a sculpting perspective). His expression is very aggressive, and he appears provoked for a fight. We believe Hasbro nailed the attitude of the face sculpt perfectly and it’s the main reason why many will overlook the rest of the figure’s flaws.

Although Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) has a lower skirt, Hasbro was certain to sculpt fully detailed pants and boots on the “inseam” of both legs. This pleasantly surprises us. For us, it proves that sculpting is still an essential and conscious part of the process for Hasbro, even if they’re cheating us on articulation. Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice), like so many other Galaxy Of Adventures figures, comes with one accessory, a double-bladed lightsaber. His hands are cupped well enough to hold this lightsaber in one hand but be warned. His right thumb is so thin and bendable that it takes a little bit of determination to get it around the hilt. The sculpting of his hands isn’t ideal for the accessory. The quality of plastic Hasbro utilizes has been an issue for years now. We’ll be lucky if they last long enough to sustain years of storage and display in our collections. Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) may not exceed your expectations, but at least we get an exclusive miniature comic book with this release. These miniature comics are fantastic. But if that exclusive addition isn’t enough to persuade you to support this line, there is still enough to appreciate with Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice). Is this version of Darth Maul the consummate version of him? Absolutely not. But it shouldn’t be disregarded as having no merit either. From the figure’s body language to the updated paint job, Darth Maul (The Sith Apprentice) at best, is bittersweet. It truly is.
