One set of Two-Packs that grabbed collectors’ attentions at 2017’s New York Toy Fair was the Han Solo/Boba Fett set. Many of us wondered why it didn’t make its way into the Rogue One line, but we all soon found at as we got closer to Force Friday II (September 1st of that year). Many people could have taken or left the Han Solo figure, but most were consumed with knowing the details of the included Boba Fett figure which looked to be of the greatest sculpts of the character the line has ever seen. Well, it pretty much is, save for its articulation. Boba Fett only comes with five points of articulation but the sculpt is what is going to win over collectors’ hearts. The helmet, while not maybe 100% perfect, is probably the best we have ever seen from a profile view. From sideview, it appears that the figure’s helmet sculpt may not drop down at the angle it does on the character from Episode V, but it is so close that we almost cannot fault the figure because it looks that good. His gauntlets, his rangefinder, his Wookiee scalps, his belt and his holster have all been faithfully replicated here. Even his blaster and pistol look fantastic. With a removable jetpack and a larger flamethrower accessory (which the jetpack attaches to for extra play value), you get a nice chunk of plastic for your dollar here. We know collectors of all type will find the merit of this Two-Packs set.
We will be honest and tell you that Boba Fett’s paint operations leave something to be desired. Hasbro did a great job at capturing and adding all of the main primary colors of Boba Fett pretty well. They’ve even added battle-damage to his helmet. And lastly, they added the two insignias from his armor brilliantly as well. But where Boba Fett falls short a little bit is the color of his uniform. It almost looks to us like Hasbro conflated the costume from The Empire Strikes Back with the costume from Return Of The Jedi (it should be an Episode V version of Boba Fett here). His jetpack is sadly unpainted. This is a disappointment because there are so many ignored details which really bum us out. Hasbro should have expended some extra deco here (and sacrificed it on Han Solo if they had to) to make it look more visually appealing. The gauntlets are both green and the belt had the smooth section in the front, so they certainly paid close attention. But his jumpsuit is much too light of a gray (like the Episode VI version). We’re also not sure if they mastered the placement of the two front pouches that fall directly below his belt either. But for a 5POA action figure, this is easily the cream of the crop. Boba Fett comes with a whopping six accessories, but most of that total is from the “off-screen” play feature here: his flame-throwing backpack and firing gauntlets. It’s a lot of fun.
Han Solo is absolutely the disappointment of the set. He too comes with five points of articulation and is pretty much everything you’d expect him to be. We suppose he comes with an accurate likeness, but out of all the samples, we found it was increasingly difficult to find one with acceptable paint operations. As a result, Han Solo looks worse than he probably is. In an interesting move, Han Solo has been sculpted in a way that his jacket is more open than it usually is. Perhaps Hasbro was referencing some source materials when he was in motion or something similar, but it’s notably different than past “Han Solo (Bespin Outfit)” figures from the past. The jacket shell is a separately sculpted piece and is easily removable if you’re interested in such things. He also comes with a blaster that can be placed in a functional holster sculpted to his right leg. Again, Han Solo seems to have a great sculpt, but most of us won’t realize it thanks to the shoddy paint job he received at the factory level. The Han Solo/Boba Fett Two-Packs set is really a nice surprise. Sure, Han Solo isn’t perfect, but we know you’re going to love the included Boba Fett figure a whole lot more.
