As the fledgling rebellion challenges the Galactic Empire in the wilds of the Outer Rim Territories, it faces a new danger: the most cunning of the Emperor's fleet officers. A tactical and military genius, Grand Admiral Thrawn coldly dissects rebel operations and methodically devises brilliant counterstrategies that make him unstoppable. One of the most revered non-humans in the Empire, Thrawn may possess the power to take over the galaxy himself, but his plans for total rule are kept in check by the reign of Emperor Palpatine. In his missions as master military strategist for the Galactic Empire, the formidable, blue-skinned Chiss warrior collects artifacts of all kinds from throughout the galactic systems. Thrawn's expansive collection spans generations of intergalactic history and encompasses multitudes of artwork, sculptures, and weapons, as well as the helmet of clone commander CC-1004, "Gree," and the ancient mask of a Jedi temple guard.

Well, it looks like the best Hasbro The Black Series [Phase III] San Diego Comic Con exclusive of 2017 is unequivocally Grand Admiral Thrawn. While each release has its strongpoints, the Grand Admiral Thrawn set stands above the rest thanks to a clever approach, lots of accessories and stunning packaging. It’s going to be painful for most collectors to open the complex packaging, but if you muster up enough strength to do so you are really going to enjoy all of the contents inside of it. We’ll get to novelty stuff that accompanies Grand Admiral Thrawn soon, but let’s talk about the star of the set first! Grand Admiral Thrawn is a stunning 6” figure. It easily falls under the “Hasbro’s best” banner with one look. The sculpt is dynamic and the paint operations are about as near perfect as you’d like to see. Granted, Grand Admiral Thrawn is NOT a complicated figure to paint correctly, but with Hasbro’s pot luck on human and quasi-human characters’ paint operations, anything could of gone wrong here with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Let’s be honest. Thankfully it’s a nonissue here. Grand Admiral Thrawn is a realistic interpretation of his character from Star Wars: Rebels. It’s also the source for where all of the accessories were inspired. Together, all of the parts here make for a well-rounded release. It’s a shame that the accessories will remain exclusives to this convention exclusive release. We really only have one issue with this set, and you’ll find out in the end of this review, so let’s take some time to focus on why this turned out to be the best 2017 San Diego Comic Con exclusive.

Grand Admiral Thrawn comes with the standard 28 points of articulation. This is across 17 areas of articulation. You don’t get any double hinge-jointed elbows with this figure, but you do get a nice range of movement from all of the ball-jointed points of articulation. His lower skirt is very pliable and allows you to pose his legs generously without being blocked. As you know well now, the “rocker” ankle joints are typically the saving grace for center of gravity issues, and the same is true for Grand Admiral Thrawn. We’re extremely impressed with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s portrait. It’s different than you might expect it to be for a realistic interpretation, but Hasbro did a magnificent job in capturing the attitude of the character in this action figure’s facial expression. His arms and legs are proportionate and make sense. Some 6” figures come across as too lanky but this isn’t the case at all for Grand Admiral Thrawn which makes us very, very happy. For us, it has been a chronic problem. But we’re proud to see it remedies here. He has a permanent, but functioning, holster. He comes with a blaster that can be housed beautifully in it when not in use. What’s more, the blaster pistol fits perfectly in his hands and he looks natural while pointing the gun as you see fit. Grand Admiral Thrawn has a great silhouette and truly looks the part an Imperial leader. We’re so happy that this Legend didn’t die and has been carried forward into new Star Wars Entertainment. It’s nice to know that Disney hasn’t completely turned their backs on the old Expanded Universe.

The accessories are simply awesome. The first stone sculpture has a beautiful silhouette. It comes with a pillar. The second is a Syndulla family kalikora. Each can be removed from the pillars to place a different piece from his collection on them to procure his displays differently. The details etched into these pieces is astounding and the accent this set in beautiful ways. Also included is a lightsaber hilt that we don’t recognize. There is a lot of detail on the hilt as well. Hasbro also included Commander Gree’s helmet. What’s cool is that Grand Admiral Thrawn can wear it if you so desire. It fits on his head very well. They’ve also included a Jedi Temple Guard mask which ALSO fits on Grand Admiral Thrawn’s head. The deco on both of these pieces is beautiful. And it makes us hope that a Jedi Temple Guard is planned for the 6” and 3.75” super-articulated lines at some point. It’s simply a blessing with what Hasbro can do when focused. Perhaps the neatest accessory here is the larger sculpture which includes a globe and two reptiles facing each other (perhaps some form of ysalmiri). It’s very big and provides environmental qualities to this figure. Lastly, Hasbro gave us the Holy Grail chalice from Indiana Jones which appears as an Easter egg in Thrawn's collection. It's awesome. We really hope that Hasbro provides more pieces like this in future releases. The MSRP on this piece is an obscene $49.99 however. 6” collectors shouldn’t allow themselves to be taken for a ride with these prices. You’re not getting this much “toy” for the prices you’re paying. It’s truly a shame really. But it’s the only negative here. Now that’s positive!
