“May I present...Savage Opress" – Asajj Ventress

Inspired by his appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sideshow Collectibles is proud to debut the Savage Opress Premium Format™ Figure.

Once an honorable Zabrak warrior, Savage Opress was molded into a bloodthirsty instrument of vengeance for Asajj Ventress, and trained as a secret Sith apprentice for Count Dooku; events which would ultimately set the long-lost brother of Darth Maul down a path of destruction felt throughout the entire galaxy.

Many Premium Format Figures collectors want to know how the people at Sideshow Collectible sleep at night knowing very well that they’ve yet to produce an Ahsoka Tano collectible in any of their multiple product scales. To be fair, they were looking to update a more modern female body buck to update the horrid Art S. Buck body that they’ve used since almost the inception of the company. That being said, Sideshow Collectibles is still very partial to The Clone Wars franchise. We have been getting one clone after another in the 1:6 Scale Figures line, an exquisite Life-Size Bust of Asajj Ventress, and multiple characters in the Premium Format Figures line; all of which have been marvelously incredibly made collectibles. The latest, Savage Opress Premium Format Figure, continues in the long tradition of Sideshow’s brilliant use of mixed media to create museum quality sculptures that any collector would be proud to display in his or her collection for eternity. These timelessly classic interpretations are mostly faithful to the scenes from which they’re inspired, but Sideshow Collectibles takes a little leeway sometimes to put a spin of their own on them. Savage Opress, as based from the season 3 episode entitled Monster is based on his appearance before Mother Talzin acted as Dr. Frankenstein to create a distrustful, angry, powerful and evil version of the Zabrak warrior. The piece is extraordinary, although we just do not like electronics added to these figure. The light-up base is actually quite cool, but light-up lightsabers? No thank you! They only last for a very short time and Sideshow Collectibles isn’t going to give collectors an endless supply of them.

Savage Opress is very large. His normal body size is definitely larger than Darth Maul’s is. He comes in seven separate parts/pieces. These include head, left forearm, right forearm, body, base and two lightsaber blades (which are some of the most delicate things Sideshow Collectibles’ have made to date). Strong magnets keep the pieces together, but personally it still makes us nervous when the forearms, which are pointed downwards, utilize this attachment feature. We could easily pull the forearm away from the arm. We’re sure with a jerky motion that perhaps one of the arms might fly off and break. We should also elaborate on the lightsaber blades a little more too now that we’re talking about fragility. Just be careful with them. Don’t bend them, bump them or break them or they will not work at all. They utilize some sort of quasi-neon gas technology and the internal components are beyond fragile. They look great but longevity is NOT in their blood at all. The good news is that Savage Opress looks pretty fantastic with or without these blades. Keep in mind however that the metal ends of the lightsabers are actually molded onto the light-up blades, so you will never have a “complete” lightsaber should you decide to display this Premium Format Figure without them. There is no battery option this time around. And frankly, we’re about just as happy about that as we are about anything. Batteries leak, they don’t last long and they put your figure at risk for breakage when you have to change them. The AC plug option here is too dreamy for words and we’re extremely thankful that Sideshow Collectibles has decided to go this route. The bottom of the base is beautiful as well and has an artful full color drawing of Savage Opress as well as the edition size and copyright information.

Savage Opress has about one of the nicest paint operations we have seen on any Premium Format Figure to date. It’s that good. He has that distinguishable brown/black head tattoo color accented by his less visible dirty yellow skin which contrast beautifully against his mostly dark features. The horns on his head are beautifully sculpted (as well as sharp) and we suggest treating the portrait with great care as not to break one of the horns off either. The detail in the sculpt is magnified by beautiful paint. Multiple uses of color are what gives Savage Opress his wonderful imperfect skin texture (as well as the dynamic sculpting of course). But we will go to our grave saying that a great paint job can make a great sculpt look flawless. This is more than the case here. Plus, the scowl on the face couldn’t capture the overall character of Savage Opress any better. We’re quite pleased with the results. His outfit is equally impressive. The layered armor is stunning, complete with scratches and incredible metallic accents. He also comes with a fabric skirt and pants and the pants tuck nicely into his well-sculpted signature boots. He stands atop a beautiful base which has clearly been cut by a lightsaber blade (perhaps his). When you press the “on” button, the base where it’s been slashed glows brightly as well as the areas underneath the platform. And of course this power also brings electricity to the double-bladed lightsaber. From the fingernails to the tips of his horns, we feel Sideshow has not ignored any detail at all to bring fans of The Clone Wars the greatest interpretation of this character to date. Yes, this scale may be out of your price range, but it’s like a gift that keeps on giving…. as corny as that may sound. But this piece will provide you with nothing but pure blissful joy guaranteed.
