"I am a Jedi, like my father before me." RETURN OF THE JEDI was a powerful conclusion to this epic saga of good versus evil. The whole world knows this film by its current title, which evokes the glorious return of the hero. But during filming, the movie was slated to be called REVENGE OF THE JEDI. Merchandise was developed based on this title, including Kenner action figure packaging. Then, late in production, there was a dramatic change. Shortly before the film was released, George Lucas decided the title should be RETURN OF THE JEDI. The final title carries a more appropriate emotional tone because, of course, a Jedi would not seek revenge.
To celebrate this monumental film and unique history of its title, we have created special packages of favorite characters from the movie, featuring the REVENGE OF THE JEDI title. May the Force be with you!
It took a quarter of a century for Star Wars collectors to get the long-awaited modern update to the vintage Kenner B-Wing Pilot action figure into the contemporary line from Hasbro. Back in 1984, the B-Wing Pilot was nearly the poster child for a peg-warmer, but that didn’t stop us from thoroughly enjoying sticking this character in the cockpit of the B-Wing Fighter Vehicle. Random pilots and guards were often as exciting to receive as the main characters. Although Hasbro went off course with some of the releases in the Evolutions line, the other three-packs in this series brought us some incredibly well-made action figures. Known as Keyan Farlander in 2008’s TLC Rebel Pilot Legacy (Series II) Evolutions set, Hasbro dusted off the tooling, changed a few of the paint operations, and stuck the figure in a fantastic 1984-inspired package as part of The Vintage Collection. We’ve felt for quite some time that Hasbro would never attempt to reissue some of the less popular Kenner characters into The Vintage Collection. But the time was right, and Hasbro needed to pad figures into their “Revenge Of The Jedi” promotion, and the B-Wing Pilot (Keyan Farlander) figure was a perfect fit to assist them with this. There is nothing revolutionary about this figure’s release this time around, but for those who monitor the changes Hasbro makes to their action figures, you can consider this one “new” from a certain point of view.
The most noticeable difference between the 2008 The Legacy Collection Evolutions figure and The Vintage Collection basic figure is the color of the pilot straps and hoses. Instead of the creamy off-white color used on the Evolutions figure, Hasbro went with a “bleach” white tone for the TVC release instead. If you look at the reference photos of these pilots, you’ll see that this was a much-needed update, and it makes the figure accurate to what we see in the film. If you recall, Hasbro painted the Evolutions version with a yellow hue by comparison. Either way, you have two distinct red B-Wing Pilot suits now. They’ll be easy to tell apart from each other. The other difference is less noticeable, but Hasbro changed the paint application ever so slightly on the beige boot coverings. If you compare the two figures side by side, you’ll see the variances. We’ve seen a few changes in the helmet as well, but due to the dirty wash utilized here, we’re not entirely sure if it’s a unique change or just the randomness of the application. There has also been some tightening up on the paint operations for both the hairline and eyes. It’s noticeable that Hasbro tweaked the process for a cleaner look this time, and we’re delighted with the results. Overall, we do think that The Vintage Collection B-Wing Pilot (Keyan Farlander) figure is the better of the two. Please understand us, many won’t care much about the disparities, but we feel it is vital to summarize the updates to assist the collecting community.
You may also find some extra silver scratches on the back of the flight vest, as well as a few other instances of color uniqueness. Regardless, we are thrilled that this character is represented in The Vintage Collection lineup now. The figure looks marvelous on its classic card with an indelible entertainment logo and character photo. And since this is a super-articulated action figure, there’s not much to complain about. With a high-rated 23 points of articulation, Keyan Farlander is a bundle of joy for your collection and enjoyable to pose in your hands. Collectors can easily position this figure to lunge forward or stand at attention. And when you throw the blaster pistol into the mix, things look more impressive. We have personally asked Hasbro for years about doing simple repacks like this to keep the line fresh and invigorating to collectors. While it’s not happening at the pace we’d like to see, putting figures like this one, as well as others, instead of straight carry-forward figures, is notably more critical to the overall health of The Vintage Collection than other releases. We want to see the pace pick up, but who knows what the future holds? Hasbro tends to agree with many of our points, yet doesn’t consistently follow through to make them a reality. Anyway, be sure to get your updated B-Wing Pilot (Keyan Farlander) action figure. You need this release for a multitude of reasons, but perhaps most importantly, to have it pilot your B-Wing Fighter (Vehicle).
