An exile from Ithor, Momaw Nadon was a rebel sympathizer who cultivated a hidden garden in the mountains south of Mos Eisley.
46 years. It took 46 years to get a super-articulated version of Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) in the Star Wars toy line. And what does Hasbro decide to do to us, who waited over four decades for this definitive update, when they finally released it? They make it a fake Deluxe figure and place it on an oversized card. Hasbro hates us, folks. And if they don’t hate us, they think we’re the stupidest people on Earth. The Deluxe format is a scam, and collectors need to speak up. It would have been beneficial for Hasbro to release this figure on a standard-sized card and mark it up, thereby preventing alienation of collectors. The Deluxe card looks awful, and Hasbro doesn’t have the money, energy, or forethought to add enough accessories to make the value feel like a “Deluxe” figure. They also used an incorrect character photo. We had to get that negativity out of the way. Aside from what upsets us, Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) might be the Star Wars action figure of the year. It is deliciously divine and an instant classic for The Vintage Collection. And we couldn’t be prouder to add it to our collections and check off another O96 from our lists. Kenner released Hammerhead in 1979. The figure came with a blue leotard, and its eyes had sclera and black pupils. Kenner didn’t have the appropriate reference materials to make an accurate action figure, but none of us cared. It’s still revered as one of the finest figures from the vintage Kenner era.
After the Kenner era, Kenner/Hasbro brought Star Wars figures back to retail a decade later. And it wasn’t too long, just the following year until they reintroduced Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) into the lineup with upgraded tooling, a slightly larger scale (4-inch scale), and new accessories and features. They released 1996’s POTF2 [R/G] Momaw Nadon "Hammerhead" figure, and it was one of their bestsellers that year. Coincidentally, it would be another decade before they revisited the figure. Throughout these 10 years, they retooled and repainted the 1996 version for various cantina sets, especially from 2002 through 2004. But in 2006, during The Saga Collection, Hasbro produced a stunning version of this character as the Momaw Nadon (SAGA 031) figure. It held up exceptionally well throughout the years, and perhaps that’s the reason that Hasbro waited so long until crafting a super-articulated version for The Vintage Collection. The 2006 TSC Momaw Nadon (SAGA 031) figure had limited articulation, but the tooling was exquisite. And we feel its design surpasses The Vintage Collection version in a couple of spots. That said, it was high time to produce an all-new version of Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) for the line, and it’s here now, much to the delight of the collecting community.
So, how does The Vintage Collection Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) fare? For us, it’s a perfect 10. Faithful to the on-screen character, it’s evident that Hasbro used the digital blueprints of The Black Series figure to work into The Vintage Collection release. Loaded with stunning detail, perfect paint operations, and a costume that reflects what we do indeed see on-screen, Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) is a highlight in the long-running line. It will stand out as one of its finest accomplishments. Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) is tall, accompanied by one of the best portraits we’ve ever seen on a figure from Hasbro, and features a decent number of accessories that help accentuate the figure while also paying homage to its various past iterations. For example, we obtained the standard E-11 blaster, which was released with 1979’s SW Hammerhead figure. Hasbro also included a modernized version of the heavy blaster rifle that was exclusive to The Power Of The Force “2” version. And then we get the staff and bar glass that Hasbro paired with The Saga Collection version. This particular release brings together the spirit of every past figure, creating a blended “ultimate” release of Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) without homogenizing anything, instead paying homage to all previous releases.
Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) comes with an extraordinary articulation system. The head sculpt features a single ball-socket, so there is no reverse ball-socket neck joint here, but that’s not a concern. Then we get the standard ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, and hands. The right hand is interchangeable, so you can plug in the other hand designed to hold the bar glass. The figure also has a ball-jointed torso. Hasbro also worked in the standard ball-socket hips and swivel thighs that most TVC figures have today. Then Hasbro finished it off with ball-jointed knees and ball-jointed/” rocker” ankles. All of the articulation parts work flawlessly with one another, allowing you to pose Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) in various ways. You’ll be surprised what you can achieve with this action figure. Overall, we’re pleased beyond expectations with how well Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) turned out. Again, it is a character that has longevity with Star Wars collectors. It will be a focus for those who grew up with the Kenner line. And we couldn’t be more thankful that Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) is officially part of The Vintage Collection now. With the new Greedo part of the HasLab Mos Eisley Cantina playset, we officially have all four aliens added to this line now. But we wouldn’t be surprised if Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead) got all the notoriety.
