Imperial AT-DT Walker - SW [S] - Vehicles

Deployed on uneven battlefields with difficult terrain, the AT-DT is a single-point mobile artillery walker unit that uses its primary cannon to provide air defense as well as lob laser artillery into the heart of enemy lines.

Adding a new vehicle into the 3.75” scaled action figure line is one of the best ways to keep the format refreshed. This sentiment is even true for vehicles that are barely seen or are of little to no consequence in the Star Wars Entertainment at hand. 3.75” scaled vehicles are implicitly necessary for the Star Wars toy line. They’re what made the line so fantastic when it began in the late seventies. And it’s comforting to see the trend continue 40 years later. It’s not like Hasbro hasn’t added vehicles into the line, but many feel like rehashes of vehicles we have received in the past. It’s the truly all-new vehicles that don’t get the attention they deserve. But it looks like things are changing in the Star Wars [Solo] line. We’re getting a healthy mix of revisited classic vehicles in addition to first-time offerings. Enter the Imperial AT-DT Walker, the newest all-new vehicle in the Star Wars [Solo] line. Sure, it’s reminiscent of an Imperial AT-ST from the Battle of Hoth or the Battle of Endor, but the completely new design with special features keep the vehicle feeling like this is the first time a vehicle like this was offered.

The Imperial AT-DT Walker comes with some nice movement. Both the “hips” and the “ankles” of the vehicle are ball-socketed which allow for more movement than flat plane swivel articulation offers. This type of articulation also allows for many more angular posing options which add to the authenticity of the vehicle’s design. The Imperial AT-DT Walker allows you to pose it leaning, almost falling over, or any other pose you wish to achieve. There are certainly limits, but you can achieve quite a bit of unique posing for a vehicle that’s meant to be a simple “5POA” release. And the added play features like the exploding canon with an ejection seat propulsion keep the Imperial AT-DT Walker from feeling static or boring. It is a fresh release, and we’re glad that Hasbro felt the vehicle was worthy of inclusion in the Star Wars [Solo] line, despite its background appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. We’re also impressed with the deco applied to the Imperial AT-DT Walker. Hasbro went with a simple approach, but we feel what they did with it gives the vehicle the personality it needs. It’s enough for this release.

Hasbro also added an all-new Stormtrooper (Mimban) figure to pilot the Imperial AT-DT Walker. It’s “from the ground up” new sculpt and we wish that Hasbro would have chosen this figure to be the basic figure release. It looks much better than the Force Link 2.0 release. The Stormtrooper (Mimban) figure pilots the Imperial AT-DT Walker beautifully and its sculpt perfectly accommodates the cockpit area and the play feature too. Sadly, the Stormtrooper (Mimban) pack-in figures comes without any of the more important accessories. You get the obligatory blaster, but he comes without his cape or heavy blaster rifle. Maybe this isn’t a big deal in the long run, but we don’t see why Hasbro couldn’t include these extra accessories for additional play value. The good news is that the accessories from the Stormtrooper (Mimban) Force Link 2.0 figure interact nicely with the Imperial AT-DT Walker pack-in figure. The Imperial AT-DT Walker is a pleasant surprise for the Star Wars [Solo] line. We didn’t have high expectations for the vehicle, but after assembling it, photographing it, and playing with it, we found it to be a joy.
