Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn has handled many difficult negotiations on behalf of the Jedi order. On some missions, he is required to wear a disguise. Bold and headstrong, he is willing to take any risk to restore lasting peace and security to the galaxy.

Qui-Gon Jinn wasn’t a character in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace who changed his outfits all that much. When he wasn’t wearing the dark brown outer robe to conceal his full identity, he essentially just wore standard Jedi gear throughout the rest of the film. There was one exception, however. Upon his journey to and from the queen’s Royal Starship and Mos Espa, he wore a poncho, also informally referred to as his Mos Espa disguise. Hasbro felt a basic figure release of this character was necessary from the basic figure line, and we have to partially agree with them. The basis of 2001’s POTJ Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) is the pack-in figure from 2000’s EI Eopie & Qui-Gon Jinn creature set. This time around, Hasbro retooled the figure to remove the action figure, repainted it to be more screen accurate, and added it to the basic figure collection to present collectors with a pretty nice update to the Qui-Gon Jinn character in Episode I. The enhancements are noteworthy. Collectors typically dislike these types of add-ons to their figures. And since the Power Of The Jedi line has been geared towards the collectors’ market, Hasbro ensured that the figure would meet our ever discretionary tastes. And we don’t think there is a better way to put that. In our opinion it has.

The figure looks pretty fantastic now and it’s a nice update to a character that can become boring just from how much the character doesn’t change from one scene to the next. When the poncho is removed, Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) looks like any other Qui-Gon Jinn figure Hasbro has already produced in the Episode I line. But even with that being said, we have noticed that greater attention to detail in the sculpt is much more evident with this release. Of course, the removal of the action figure is a true blessing. Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) now functions like a normal action figure. His stance is widened, but that’s because this was designed to interact with an Eopie beast. That original Episode I set, interestingly, was one of the rarest Episode I products released in the entire Episode I lineup. From that perspective, it was a wise move for Hasbro to make the pack-in figure to this set better with a retooling update and even better paint job. Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) comes with a removable soft-goods poncho and green fully lit lightsaber. These are about the only accessories you really need for this figure, so Hasbro added the perfect amount here. The paint operations are really tight and clean.

Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) is a wonderful addition to the Power Of The Jedi line. It’s also will perfectly complement any “desert” Darth Maul figure as this is the outfit Qui-Gon Jinn wore to confront Maul for the very first time. Plus, because Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) is in a quasi action pose, he looks perfect as it to battle Darth Maul. We also love the interchangeability the figure posses as well. Because the soft-goods poncho is so easily removable, you can create most of the looks of Qui-Gon Jinn from The Phantom Menace with ease. And this is comes with an extra bonus because the sculpt is one of the finest for this character in the basic figure line. Better versions will undoubtedly come along in the future, but for now this is a very nice interpretation and holds its own in the line very well. Some have commented that the figure’s height isn’t in scale. That may be partially true, but we feel most forget that this action figure is in a slouched position (his legs at least). Because the sculpt was part of the Episode I line however, we do believe that Hasbro wasn’t obsessive about proper scale so it’s extremely possible the scale to Qui-Gon Jinn (Mos Espa Disguise) isn’t exactly perfect. It’s good enough though for the time being and for us that’s what matters in this case. The figure has too much good to discount otherwise.
