Yoda

Battle of Geonosis

title: jedi master

rescues: survivors of an ill-fated Jedi taskforce

engages: count dooku in a lightsaber battle

Jedi Master Yoda swoops down on the Geonosis arena aboard a Republic gunship flown by clone pilots. He arrives just in time as a horde of battle droids surrounds the Jedi Knights. The clone army repels the droids and a full-scale battle breaks out. Amid the chaos and confusion, Yoda follows his instincts to a dark hangar where Count Dooku has injured Obi-Wan and Anakin. Yoda and Dooku battle to a stalemate, but Yoda senses the cloud of the dark side has grown stronger.

Hasbro made some of the better Prequel Trilogy versions of Yoda in the Revenge Of The Sith line. And since Yoda doesn’t change appearance that much between Episode II and Episode III, it makes sense that Hasbro could use a Yoda figure from the Revenge Of The Sith line to make an Episode II interpretation of him. And that’s exactly what they did for the Yoda in The Saga Collection. Hasbro needed a few main characters to round out the mostly motley crew of background characters that made up the Attack Of The Clones wave. Yoda was chosen to accentuate the wave and Hasbro gave him some extra accessories (which could both satisfy Episode II and Episode III specific scenes) and included him in the Battle Of Geonosis sub-collection. There definitely not too much new brought to this iteration of Yoda, but he’s a fine addition if you haven’t purchased this figure previously.

For all intents and purposes, Yoda is an extremely slight repaint of 2005’s ROTS Yoda (III 3) figure. You might as well call it a straight repack. There are some slight differences in deco but as far as we’re concerned we’re more comfortable designating him as a straight repack. Yoda comes with a removable plastic cloak, Force effect, cane (gimer stick) and lightsaber. This is really all you need to accessorize our favorite diminutive Jedi Master. And of course he comes with an Episode II specific action figure stand that has been personalized with his name. Yoda fairs average to good as far as his paint job and sculpt are concerned. It’s certainly better than most of the Yoda action figures we received between 2002 and 2004, but it seems that Hasbro needs to go a few steps further to perfect him. Some of Yoda’s proportions are out of sync and the dimensions of his head in particular look too elongated and not round as they should be.

As with many of the “repacked” figures in The Saga Collection, Yoda tends too look exceptionally awesome packaged. We love the color coding of the sourcing and the black and silver card back design is a nice amalgamation of vintage and modern. But as loose collectors, we opened him up and are enjoying the new action figure stand along with some of the gathered accessories that are not specific to Yoda. The Attack Of The Clones wave in The Saga Collection doesn’t break a lot of new ground. But there is certainly something endearing about it. It’s hard for Hasbro to go wrong when picking main characters to release or rerelease in the basic figure line. Thankfully Hasbro is using their brains and definitely creating innovative ways to sell us the same old stuff while keeping it fresh. Yoda also comes with a blue or red miniature hologram. Trust us when we tell you that the holograms are no big deal.
