We find it astounding how a simple change in color and a more complex application of battle-damage markings can make something completely new and fresh (and totally awesome). We’re talking in particular about the Clone Sergeant (Phase I Armor) from Sideshow Collectibles’ prolific Militaries Of Star Wars sub-line. This group of glorious one-sixth scaled figures has been dancing in the limelight for quite some time now and it doesn’t seem as if an end is near. We don’t mind. Sideshow has developed the absolute best clone trooper body and armor of all licensees to date and the accuracy in the shapes of the helmets and colors they choose is spectacular and just bring the figures to life. The Clone Sergeant is really just a repaint of the 12” Republic Clone Trooper (Phase I Armor) figure but they make it unique thanks to the green color flashes and battle-damage and carbon-scoring marks. And because we are “out of control completists” we want to see the rest of them get realized in this scale. When Sideshow Collectibles has the opportunity to repaint any of their established sculpts, it saves on tooling budgets so that they can bring us totally new figures down the road. With the “unofficial announcements” of the bounty hunters coming, we know the need to “reuse” sculpts is very pressing because we all want those characters from The Empire Strikes Back. In order to do that however, they need to double dip. So for now, a new clone trooper from Attack Of The Clones will more than do.

This isn’t the first time we’ve received a clone trooper officer. The first was the Republic Clone Lieutenant (Phase I Armor) that was a 2010 San Diego Comic Con exclusive. (It totally rocked.) And it was this figure that created the frenzy for us to want all four officers as soon as humanly possible in 12” form. (Hey Sideshow! You better keep in mind that we still need the captain and commander!) Interestingly, the lieutenant and the sergeant a have typically been exclusives with other licensees. It seems that Sideshow intended to break the format here as the sergeant is a non-exclusive release. What’s even more notable than this is that their affiliate Medicom Toy has produced both the Clone Trooper Captain and the Clone Trooper Commander as exclusives. We technically have all four clone trooper officers between the two vendors. But again, we won’t see them as all completed until Sideshow Collectibles makes the captain (red) and commander (yellow) in their own line. The Clone Sergeant (Phase I Armor) is wonderfully done. The armor is the standard "eggshell" color (off white) that they have used time and again and it looks amazing on the clones. Sideshow has found the absolute perfect match for the green used to mark the color flashes long the outer edges of the arms and the perimeter of the visor and the stripe running vertically along the top of the helmet. And then it’s just gravy to see what they’ve done with the battle-damage markings placed indiscriminately throughout the figures body.

We can’t believe we are going to complain about all of the included hand attachments, but we are. There are way too many included here. But we have never understood why many of the more expensive 12” figures come with so many of these interchangeable parts. Many collectors love this, but for us it's a bit overwhelming. But there is only one figure included in the set and he doesn't need a dozen hand attachments. Once you attain a certain pose for display, are you really going to change it up that many times in your collection? Well, if you do then more power to you, but this isn’t a feature that we have utilized often, if at all. But extra parts can never really hurt. Sideshow Collectibles has managed to retain the original $89.99 retail on the basic Militaries Of Star Wars figures, so if they give us an extra set of hands like they do for this figure, it’s all the same to us. Clone Sergeant (Phase I Armor) also comes with a DC-15 blaster and DC-15 blaster rifle. In one of the many hand attachments, the guns fit in them beautifully. And with the inclusion of the newly designed “kneeling” feet, the Militaries Of Star Wars figures offer many new posing options to collectors. We’re halfway there to getting all of the clone trooper officer 12” figures from Sideshow Collectibles now. We hope we don’t have to wait too long for the rest to come. We like the Clone Sergeant (Phase I Armor) figure more than the Republic Clone Lieutenant) just because of the green color. (We know it’s a silly reason.) And we just cannot wait for more clones to come our way in this line. Excellent job Sideshow Collectibles!
