The brutish nature of Gamorreans, along with their great strength and violent tendencies, made them excellent mercenaries and guardsmen in Jabba's desert palace. (Freeze Frame packaging only)

Here piggy, piggy, piggy! That’s what collectors were clamoring in 1997 heading into our third year in the modern Star Wars line. When in the world was Kenner/Hasbro going to make the main guards of Jabba’s palace? The 1983 vintage Kenner Gamorrean Guard always held a special place in the hearts of collectors, but we all wanted to see what Kenner/Hasbro was capable of over a decade later. Thankfully, the final figure came out extremely well, beyond expectations in fact. No one honestly needed to worry about proportions being too bulky, or a lack of articulation, so it probably is safe to say that most were satisfied and even excited about this release. The 1997 POTF2 [G/FF] Gamorrean Guard is truly an impressive sculpt. He is large, threatening and has an expression that should strike fear in anyone who crosses him. These green-skinned creatures are known for the brutish force (and their lack of wit) and we believe that Kenner/Hasbro translated these qualities wonderfully into this action figure. With detail that should impress the most picky of collectors, we think that the Gamorrean Guard is a standout figure in The Power Of The Force “2” line.

The Gamorrean Guard comes with six points of articulation. A swivel head (something that was missing from the vintage Kenner figure) is joined by two swivel shoulders, two swivel hips and a swivel waist (also not included with the 1983 version). This amount of articulation is nothing out of the ordinary, but the with the way the arms and legs have been posed, this simple articulation interacts wonderfully with the figure. We’re really impressed with the cleanliness of the paint operations here. And by that we mean Kenner/Hasbro has added final washes where necessary to breathe life into these lifeless characters. The Gamorrean Guard’s skin has multiple tones and the outfit has collected dirt and grime. It’s truly an impressive deco here. What we should point out however is that the skin tone is too light. Actually it’s significantly too light. (Editor’s Note: This was corrected on 2004’s OTC Gamorrean Guard (OTC #30) figure.) Other than that we’re quite impressed with both the sculpt and the deco of the Gamorrean Guard. This is what collectors have been asking for a long time now and the Gamorrean Guard is a testament that Hasbro is listening.

The Gamoreean Guard’s only accessory is a vibro-ax. It too is beautifully sculpted and painted and represents one of the three weapons used by these guards in Jabba’s palace. The vibro-ax will only fit into the Gamorrean Guard’s left hand because the right hand is in a fisted position. This is fine though because in all honesty the figure looks great holding the weapon, even if the only option is one hand. While so many action figures are getting two accessories, perhaps the extra weight of the Gamorrean Guard has expended that budget. We jest of course. But he really only needs the one weapon. To meet demand, (and because we feel the figure is just worthy of this because of how cool it is), the Gamorrean Guard was repackaged and included in the Freeze Frame action slide phase of The Power Of The Force “2” lineup. As with all Freeze Frame figure, we suggest you pick up this one for the awesome pack-in premium. The tiny addition contains a still from Jabba’s palace with two Gamorrean Guards smack-dab in the middle of the image. It’s a lovely premium item and we’re glad Kenner/Hasbro is doing such things. The Gamorrean Guard is a highlight of POTF2. You should definitely own a couple of him.
