Small in stature and mechanically adept, pit droids scurry to service Podracers in the height of competition.
While Hasbro teased us with a random pack-in Pit Droid with the various Podracer Pilots released in the Episode I line, it wasn’t until the tail end of it that we received a dedicated basic figure of the DUM-series Pit Droid in its own packaging. What made this release better, however, was that we got two differently colored Pit Droids for the price of one…. plus a pretty darn cool accessory that to this day we don’t know is screen accurate or not. We honestly don’t care either. The Pit Droids (2-Pack) probably should have been part of the inaugural wave of figures, but Hasbro had their hands full making four unique versions of Battle Droids and two unique versions of Destroyer Droids to focus any needed attention on Pit Droids. But we’re thrilled they relented and culled together a wonderful two-pack that will surely delight collectors. If you want us to be honest, while the Pit Droids don’t have a wealth of articulation, Hasbro did an amazing job at capturing their quirky posture and pose with the designs provided to us in this basic figure multipack. They look ripped from the movie and that’s a wonderful thing.
What makes the Pit Droids especially wonderful and effective is the inclusion of ball-socket heads. This articulation type allows a full range of movement and you can articulate the head in ways that give the Pit Droids attitude and character. Sure, the remaining swivel shoulders and hips are extremely limiting, but as we mentioned earlier, they’ve been positioned in ways which you would probably want them to be in anyhow. Each Pit Droid has a unique sculpt. The power tool accessory has been designed to accommodate the white Pit Droid, but we have been able to give it to the more upright tan Pit Droid for alternate posing options. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the Pit Droids (2-Pack) figures. Collectors will be hard pressed to find fault with what Hasbro has tooled into these small action figures. Aside from some bowing of the legs, we’d venture to say that the Pit Droids (2-Pack) will be everything that collector wanted them to me, and perhaps even more. We’re also extremely impressed with the paint operations given to these action figures. The insignias on the heads and bodies are especially beautiful.
It’s definitely hard to reference these two specific Pit Droids in The Phantom Menace, but we’re sure Hasbro must have been inspired by them in Episode I or the various source materials they had access to in order the develop them. Either way, these are wonderful playthings and will add a new dimension to your Episode I collection as well out flesh out a diorama or display beautifully. Still, many collectors skeptical of the comedy elements in The Phantom Menace were seemingly unwilling to give this modern droid duo a chance. After all, in the film they were droid dead ringers for the Three Stooges and most thought that was taking things a bit too far. But we feel that if fans searched their souls hard enough, they’d realize that silliness perpetuated all Star Wars films, including the Original Trilogy. It just seemed that the new kid on the block, The Phantom Menace, was an easy target. No matter your position, it’s difficult to deny how wonderful the Pit Droids (2-Pack) set is. These figures will be the perfect template for Hasbro to repaint them and give us as many styles and colors as possible. They also come with a useless CommTech chip. As you imagine, they don’t say much at all.
