Amazon Sending Out TBS6 [SW40] Artoo-Detoo Cancellation Emails

It’s raining cancellations! In what is sure to be a devastating blow to collectors waiting in anticipation for The Black Series [Star Wars 40] Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2), some of our readers are receiving the dreaded email from Amazon that their long-delayed figures are ultimately being cancelled. Hasbro also stated in the Star Wars Action News article that Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) and Han Solo were two figures still coming, so this is definitely upsetting news. Click through to read the email going out to some collectors. Special thanks to JTA reader Matthew N. for sharing his experience with us.

      You ain’t seen nothing yet.

  • Jaken Wraith

Wow, surprised by this News. I heard, like we all did that they just shipped solid Case Pack’s of R2 and Han out. I guess from what was sent out, Amazon did not make the “cut”. This does not mean that all other Retailer’s will be cancelling Order’s though, the ones that were Shipped have to go somewhere.

    • The question is “were they shipped?”

      • BayAreaSean

Question is….should you take everything they say at con interviews with a grain of salt? Actually, the one thing that hasn’t been talked about is that maybe the margins for Hasbro weren’t all that big, so they didn’t print a lot of it even though they were highly in demand figures. Although the card back uses less cardboard and plastic, it costs a lot more to produce full color pieces than it does to produce 2 color boxes. So in the end, are we really talking about printing costs and ROI?

        • Should I take what Hasbro says as a viable answer? Yes, we should, but it is appearing more and more we cannot.

          • Xo Tica

How come my comment further up is awaiting moderation? I can see any profanities included. 🤔

          • I see your comment just fine. I am not sure what you’re talking about.

I can see a little clock and a message which says hold on this is waiting to be approved by. Jedi Temple Archives News and Headlines

      • Jaken Wraith

Not Evans, but the other one (i forget his name) specifically said in the Action News Interview that they just shipped out. Then also said some Wave 2 Fig’s were prob still in the Retail Distrubution Pipeline. And with a 3 Week cruise across the Ocean to get here, now is about when they would prob be hitting our Shores if they shipped the Week before the Interview was done. I bet the number’s that were actually Shipped were just smaller than expected, and Amazon did not make the cut. BBTS and EE will prob be getting what was Shipped, my pre-order for a second R2 has not been cancelled yet.

        • I will conceded the answer was fuzzy, but isn’t it reading into what they said a little bit about wave 2? I don’t know if I heard what you heard on wave 2.

          • Jaken Wraith

You may be right, i will have to watch it again, been a little bit since i saw it. Might of even been in a different iterview, and not the “Action News” one. There was a couple Video Interviews of them out there i saw. I could easily be mixing them up.

      • Xo Tica

        Probably shipped to E Bay.

  • The Porg

    No, there is another.

  • Stereotypical Evil Archer

Has this whole 6inch fiasco been worth it?

    • rusty_t

I think it shows the line was way more popular than they expected.
Hopefully next time they will make sure more figures are made.

      • Stereotypical Evil Archer

Lots are not selling, how is that considered successful?

        • rusty_t

I was referring to the 40th anniversary figures.

  • SteveU1

This line is the biggest disaster in Hasbro history. They finally had a line they couldent make enough of to meet demand and they dont make many at all. I honestly think if they made 10,000 more cases everyone would sell

    • Andrew

Part of it might be rarity increasing sales, but I think they definitely underestimated the demand for this set.

      • Mike Moore (04515f4n)

Tey wanted it all to sell out before TLJ merch came out.

    • 80sRobot

I’ve seen the Vader early bird on clearance at Walmart. Have these figures really been selling? I’ve seen R5-D4 peg warm at Gamestop. I don’t know, just wondering if the first wave didn’t sell enough for Hasbro bottom line (which may be too conservative, unrealistic).

  • Artoo looks like he’s ready for his trip to Bangkok….

  • Grand Admiral Thrawn

Glad I got him on ToysRUs (too soon?) around march/April. Geez I can’t believe he is going around 100$ on Amazon

  • Emperor was a jerk

And this line is the one that Hasbro WANTS people to buy (6″ line). Imagine how bad things are going to be when the Vintage collection returns- a line (SA 3.75″) they have shown to have really no interest in. I really feel for Hasbro collectors these days. It isn’t really any fun anymore.

    • Kerr Roeder

I think you hit the nail on the head when you talk about the fun factor. As a collector there’s a pretty big difference between challenge and frustration. It’s always satisfying to find a highly anticipated, highly sought after piece. But when it’s next to impossible to get, or becomes more trouble than it’s worth in the end, it takes a lot out of the experience. At the end of the day, a hobby is supposed to be fun and satisfying. Not frustrating and disappointing.

    • Marvin

It’s the reason why I am moving out of black series and into kotobukiya and mafex.

      • Emperor was a jerk

I have done the same but with Sideshow/Hot Toys. Way more expensive, I know but I get one or two a year and they look incredible. At this point as a collector I’d rather have one Hot Toys figure over 20 Hasbro figures.

Also I have turned my attention back to my vintage collection (’78 – ’85).

    • 80sRobot

I think most of the upcoming 3.75″ VS line is a scheme to clear out extra stock of 3.75″ BS figures they had sitting in storage, especially the Walmart exclusives (e.g. Jyn, Cassian and the Deathtrooper).

Only Snoke, the Imperial Tank Driver, and Doctor Aphra will be unique.

      • Matthew Leuck

The amount of labor it would take to unpackage those figures and repackage them on TVC would be cost-prohibitive.

  • rusty_t

    We’re doomed.

  • RumSleg

Since 40th Artoo was instantly hard to find, hasn’t someone from Hasbro said somewhere along the way that Artoo and Han would be likely options for re-releases in the regular boxes? Or am I confusing that with the promise of solid casepacks of 40th Artoo and Han?

    • Xo Tica

There was the promise of solid 40th casepacks.

      • There might still be. There could be other factors involved with these Amazon cancellations too, like someone above suggested about too long of a time frame to keep the orders open. I don’t know. I just know it’s a disaster.

        • James

Big Bad Toy Store and Entertainment Earth took preorders on these a while back

        • HanSoloMio

they might not want to book revenue they don’t know if they’ll be able to recognize.

      • Darth_Rizzen

There have been solid cases of 40th figures, all right. Too bad they were all Leias.

I should have taken a photo of these Hasbro boxes, but yes, they arrived in France, invaded the shelves and killed the 40th line as surely as Zuvio did.

The demand for 6″ ANH Leia after Carrie Fisher’s untimely death has been catastrophically overestimated.

    • But that’s the point. People don’t want them in black and red boxes. If they did, that Stormtrooper and Vader wouldn’t be the last figures to be sold out of this first TLJ wave.

      • RumSleg

I’m not sure I follow. The currently re-packed stormtrooper is on its third (at least) release, and the Vader is two per case and there’s already been another version of Vader. I think Han and Artoo moved fast not just because they were single-packed in the 40th collection, but because Artoo was in the very first wave ever, and Han was also in an early wave. (It’s a little harder to believe there was a great demand for Han after the Han/Greedo packs gathered dust for so long.)

I think I’ve read that Hasbro is looking at re-releasing the earliest releases (X-Wing Luke, Artoo, Maul) because so many people didn’t start collecting the line until after they were gone from stores. That’s why X-Wing Luke was picked for the Celebration exclusive. And that’s why I have a sense that Hasbro also said Artoo and Maul might be back in boxes soon. The 40th re-release clearly didn’t satisfy the market demand for Artoo.

  • There really is something to be said when figures aren’t packed out equally. There should not be this much disparity between Leia (a new figure because of the revised head sculpt) and a straight repack (Han Solo) who was one of the worst peg-warmers in the history of the TBS6 line. What the heck?

    • Xo Tica

In my neck of the woods Han flew of the shelves, mind you not much stock hit the UK.

      • Danny

In my area, they didn’t even hit the pegs. I got lucky when I showed up at my local walmart at 3 AM before work and they had a whole unopened case sitting on a pallet. After that case, I never saw “any” of the other figures at all. Pretty sure they only got one single case.

  • King Bowser

If I recall correctly from one of my past phone conversations with an Amazon rep, Amazon has a policy of canceling pre-orders if they’ve been delayed past a certain amount of time. Even if stock is incoming, they’ll still cancel because too much time has passed. Toys R Us has a similar policy.

These may still go up for sale on Amazon once they get more stock, but I feel for anyone who pre-ordered and misses out. It’ll be scalper bait for sure.

    • Xo Tica

The only sensible options are to either get the Bandai kit or the SH Figuarts version. ( Provided you are nor worried about the 40AC packaging).

      • MicroCapo

The Figuarts versions are absolutely incredible. Some of my favorite figures. Figuarts is the GOAT of 1/12

  • Funtomaz

It’s amazing to me how one of the peg warmers of 2013/14 now is a highly sought after figure. A figure which is seriously underscaled and looks cheap. R2 is one of the worst 6 in Black Series figures. And I say that as a 6 inch collector. There was a reason he was a peg warmer a few years ago.
Why not buy the superb SH Figuarts R2? Or the Mafex R2? Even an unpainted R2 model kit looks a lot better than what Hasbro is offering here and the kit is not even expensive. And with the model kit you get R5 (properly scaled) or BB-8 as a second droid! Print your own Vintage card if that is your thing and put one of the other droids in a plastic bubble.

    • jerome

it was the set as a whole that i found amazing and collectable…it wasnt about getting the best figure…i only want, collect, or buy black series brand. not even interested in other brands. and this set just hit a nostalgic chord with me…and in a couple months the 40 anniversary is over forever, and this uncompleted set will be my memory of it.

      • Jay Richards

Totally agree. The nostalgia of this had me over the moon, only to have Hasbro cut distribution before anything even seemed to hit the market. Because of that, I am pretty much dumping my Hasbro stuff and will not be buying much from them ever again.

        • jerome

im hoestly half considering it myself…this hobby is supposed to be fun…but hasbro seems more worried about scalpers than the collectors.

      • Funtomaz

Ah ok, for me it’s only about the figure. Hasbro might as well sell them in brown paper bags 😀 Having a complete 40th anniversary BS collection surely is a nice thing and it’s aggravating when you have an incomplete collection.

I think since R2 was such a bad peg warmer when he was first released, that Hasbro seriously underestimated demand for the figure. Han wasn’t selling too well either when he was first released.

        • Hairy Dawg

Now that is an idea! Special Edition brown paper bag 6in Black Series figures. Sold online only for 45 minutes at a premium over the standard packaging. I am such a completionist sucker I would buy the set!

        • jerome

i too dont care much about packaging, id rather have 99% of fig prices be put into the figure. with that said…this 40th set instantly became my favorite part of my collection and brought me back to those feelings i had as a child watching star wars in the theatre and later buying those 1st figs with my mom…for myself i wanted 2 full sets…1 just to look at and feel nostalgic…and 1 to display loose because they look so awsome together!…and neither option will happen now. the fact im a single father and these black series are my 1 selfish treat in life to myself. but there is absolutely no way that i will spend the scalper amounts for a stormtrooper and chewbacca to complete my collection when i have an 11yr old angel that i could buy so many things for with much money so im okay going without them…but it does make me sad…something with the potential of giving so many good feelings has become a frustrating source of sadness…and while most the younger collectors might not understand this, i bet im not alone, and i feel a little betrayed, a little abandoned, and a little lied to by Hasbro. a company that im a loyal customer of. but ill get over it, all i need to is look at my daughter to realize these toys really are not important.

  • hammyhamster

Sadly… this was my experience and update. Matthew N is meeeee!

The two R2’s I had on order since February with Amazon were both cancelled. BBTS is my last and final hope, BUT… if anyone needs a Stormtrooper, Raider or C3-PO I’m up for some trade action for a R2 or possibly Han.

    • — Jon —

If BBTS comes through with solid case Hans, I’ll trade you for C3-PO… =)

      • hammyhamster

I have R2 with BBTS on order (fingers crossed) and Han I have with EE.

*IF* I can’t get the R2 or Han, I’ll gladly do a swap for either of those for a 3PO, but I think we’re both gonna be up shat-creek if Amazon is cancelling their orders (like they did mine).

The only hope that I think we have is that Amazon simply has some time-policy with backorders and cancel them if they can’t fill them after 9 months or whatever… but I admit, I’m worried that EE or BBTS won’t be getting full cases of Han or R2 now.

        Hope I’m wrong

        • — Jon —

I have R2 and Han on order from the single pack cases as well from EE & BBTS, but in reverse order, lol. Got lucky and found Han in wild afterwards, but kept the order. Since we haven’t gotten the cancellation notice unlike the case orders… fingers crossed!

    • jerome

dam…i saw a han for weeks at walmart but left it for another collector…i went back after reading your comment and its finally gone…if theres any non 40th figs you need ill gladly trade for your extra stormtrooper???…ive got an extra maul, shocktrooper, 2 extra proto fetts ect…?

      • hammyhamster

I have all those as well. Sucks. I actually have a complete set of wave 1 and 2, but I sold my extra R2’s and Han’s because I thought “I’m covered with Amazon / BBTS / EE”… but looks like not now. Ugh.

I still want an extra R2 and Han, though, so keep me in mind if you find one in good shape. I’ll do either straight up for a 40th trooper if I get the dreaded “will not ship” from EE or BBTS.

  • Like A Bossk

With all these order cancellations I’m starting to have a bad feeling about the future of this https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/df186d65182629fab432c8ee02ab222dd374180b0043f781b2a228c597ad9914.jpg

    • Save the dream!

    • This and the Fenn Rau can basically be considered Entertainment Earth exclusives at this point. They’re definitely coming.

      • Like A Bossk

Thanks for the info.I just saw 2 listings on amazon with FEB 2018 dates. I ordered one from Dorkside. I haven’t seen anyone report this but Toys R Us .com has 2 new Forces Of Destiny sets just a heads up for people who collect this line as I do.

        • 80sRobot

Provided that TRU doesn’t shut down by the end of this year.

      • TatooineSandworm

Dorkside and BBTS have these up for order as well. At the same price as EE, so would that mean they are getting them from Hasbro or EE?

        • They are definitely getting their fulfillment from EE for these figures only.

      • Subcoolin

There is also an online toy shop in Toronto …Northmen Collectibles….is up for pre order…I think they get them from E.E.

  • jerome

steve evans sounded so concerned and believeable when he said more r2dt, han solo, and wave 2 were coming….? i would really love hasbro to at least tell collectors an honest and detailed reason this amazing set was so screwed up in distribution. i am very happy that i have rd-d2 and han, but i feel for collectors that never got the chance, i missed out on a storm and chewy…nothing like owning part of set, thanks hasbro.

    • Hazzbro Jonez

that’ll never happen. just like they’ll never say that it costs WAY less to make black series packaging and not “because black has always been a star wars color” like any intelligent person can see through any corporate speak BS. i guess i’ve dealt with nike’s lie-corporate speak for so long i no longer believe anything any executive says anymore…..babies would call me a hater and complacent people would call me a cynic but to me its just common sense

    • Aric

OH MANNN WE’RE MISSING THE DEATH BLOW!!

  • jason1978

It’s available from other sellers but for $99.99 to $149.99

    • jerome

if i spent 99.99 on a new $20 fig id go from feeling nostalgic to feeling like an idiot

  • Coleman Miller

Frak. I feel bad for those who can’t get these, they looked good.

  • Aric

This definitely sucks. Praying the promised solid cases actually come through, but im finding it harder and harder to believe anything hasbro promised on this line.

  • LadyFerry

I am in the UK and I pre-ordered the Jawa, the Tusken Raider and the Death Squad Commander from Forbidden Planet ages ago. I got an email today stating that they will not be able to fulfil my order as they will not be getting them in stock any time soon, and they cancelled my pre-orders.

    • It’s gone international now!

      • International? Have you heard what they’re saying on Malastare? Very mad. Very dangerous.

    • Funtomaz

I imported my Jawa and Death Squad Commander from Amazon UK marketplace ages ago (the very same day my pre-orders in Germany were canceled). At a premium, of course… but that one Amazon seller had lots of the Jawa and Death Squad Commander. Makes you wonder how these people get the figures when Forbidden Planet (or etailers) get none.

  • HanSoloMio

Did I miss something? Didn’t these go up for pre-order before they were released by multiple e-tailers? Didn’t they fulfill those orders? They fulfilled mine! Didn’t everyone capable of posting on this comments section have access to buy those online – at that time?

  • SarcoPlankton

NJ Toys claimed until a couple weeks ago (via email) that they were getting their shipments in February (I had ordered some seconds at beginning of May). Today they refunded my orders. Very glad I got this set early. The house of cards is collapsing.

  • Hazzbro Jonez

i managed to find 3, all non-mint. matter of fact most of my 40th collection is non-mint. am i doing this wrong?surely i can’t be happy with a non-complete non-mint collection? what will IG think of my collection? is there even a non-mint hashtag? lol. it adds to the vintage appeal. i even left price stickers on mine from wal mart and wal greens

  • Darth_Rizzen

I’m going to end up getting that 40th R2 that’s been pegwarming forever due to the insane price (€37/$44)

Not because I like it (the figure is undersized, ill proportioned and poorly painted) or because I like the card (Those 40th cards just look off compared to my memories of the original vintage or TVC), but just to say I have it… 🤣

Hasbro have been taking us all for fools, worldwide, with those supposed “solid cases” of R2s and Solos. It’s not the retailers, believe me…

  • Nick Dickens

To paraphrase Grand Moff Tarkin ”They lied. They lied to us!”

  • Good Man

This is the only Hasbro item I’ve bought in the stores in like two years. Im a sucker for vintage carded and love R2.
