Topic: Q&A of the Day

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 66. Topic: Um, why do you not include packaged shots in the freaking reviews?

Q: Please don't take offense because I am a huge fan of the RDRs, but I just don't get why you don't include packaged shots of the items, especially when you talk about packaging in [many of] the reviews. Since you're my new resource, I was hoping you might be able to add these details. (Steven W.)

A: Steven, thank you for reading and thanks for the feedback. It seems that this topic comes up every couple of years. I am not a packaged collector, so it makes things difficult to include packaged shots in the reviews. Besides, RDRs were created to talk about the actual item in the packaging, not the packaging itelf. We showcase packaging in our Visual Guides. I personally don't really understand carded/packaged collectors. For me, it's about the toy inside. Seeing it outside of the packaging gives me a clear unaltered picture of what I am really looking at. Fancy packaging, while cool, is really deceitful. It reminds me of kids' junky breakfast cereal. The packaging makes you want the cereal, but how good are the nuts and bolts of it. Is the cereal full of whole grains, or is it all simple carbs and sugar? That is how I view the toys I review. Can they stand up on their own without the packaging. Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Plus, I don't have patience photographing something I will be throwing away. I made one exception and that was for products in The Vintage Collection because I felt that the packaging was equal to the experience of the toys inside of it.
