Topic: Q&A of the Day

Welcome to our next Q and A of the Day post! This column will be published daily, weekly, monthly, or just based on how many questions I get emailed – but no more than one a day. Feel free to send in your questions and I will put them in the queue. Click through for Q and A of the Day: Day 61. Topic: Why doesn't Hasbro reuse more sculpts than they do?

Q: Hi Paul. I have a question for the Question of the Day. Why is it, in your opinion Hasbro doesn't reuse old sculpt to make new figures as much as they could ? Let me explain. It seems to me that to repaint the legacy collection Stass Allie to Adi Galia wouldn't be too difficult ? And kids definitely know who she is as her death in The Clone Wars is hard to forget. Also why not use the VC Admiral Ackbar to give us a realistic version of the Clone Wars Admiral Ackbar ? All he'd really need is a new helmet like the one from the show. Or even using Darth Plagueis to give us an updated San Hill ! Why do you think Hasbro is so afraid to save money this way when they have no problems saving their money by creating dreadful 5POA figures which we really don't want to buy ? Or am I just crazy and this actually wouldn't save any money ? In this day and age when plastic is so expensive surely they could save a few bucks by releasing reworked figures instead of creating new 5POA sculpts. Thanks. (Toryn)

A: Wait. Adi Gallia died in The Clone Wars? You spoiled that for me! I think the reason Hasbro is not using great sculpts as much as they should is because they are very disorganized at the moment. They had the carpet pulled out from under them multiple times from the end of 2012 through about now. The cancellation of the 3D films totally stopped their plans dead in the tracks. Since they plan their lines and line looks about a year and a half in advance, you can see why things just fell apart. Their action plan was meant to last a few years, but they've been scrambling ever since. On top of the high cost of action figures, their erroneous new approach on kids' action figures and their consistent blame on the collecting community that our numbers continue to dwindle and we don't support the line, I think that they are weary and are trying to regroup. This year's Toy Fair is a perfect example. They announced only TWO The Black Series figures in the presentation, yet showed a whole bunch more including Ree-Yees, Sergeant Doallyn and others that were NEVER formally announced by them until all of the fan sites walked down to the showroom and saw them. Of course, you knew they were coming months ago thanks to JTA's rumor reports, but Hasbro must have believed they were already announced and that's why they didn't include them in the presentation. That should give you some indication that they are so confused and that their heads are still spinning from Lucasfilm's whirlwind of disorganization and last minute plan changes. I am still positive for SDCC this year. I think we are going to be blown away. I hope so at least. So I am eager to see what comes of all of this.
