SACRAMENTO—

A former Caltrans contractor convicted of defrauding the agency out of more than a million dollars was sentenced to nine years in prison, Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced Friday.

Elk Grove resident Eric Hodgson, 43, owned Phenix Print & Image. Caltrans alleged that they hired Hodgson to do some advertisement work for them, only to have him take the money and not do the work.

Caltrans discovered Hodgson’s fraud after uncovering forged invoices during a routine request for proof that the advertisements actually ran.

The invoices stretch back to contracts Hodgson was awarded back in 2008 and 2009. He was awarded a third contract in 2011, however, no invoices were paid for that year.

In total, the California Department of Justice found that Hodgson defrauded Caltrans out of more than $1.8 million.

Prosecutors said that Hodgson used the money to pay off a mortgage, pay for exotic trips, and buy toys and comics – including a collection of Star Wars memorabilia worth more than $10,000.
