Research Droids Reviews: August 14, 2013 – August 27, 2013

Luke Skywalker - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#01)
It’s not often that you’ll find an entry in our Research Droids Reviews written in the first person singular. Don’t ask me why, but once I started writing in the first person plural it just sort of stuck and I haven’t gone back.... (read the full review)

Darth Maul - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#02)
We aren’t crazy about saying this, but The Black Series 6” line is going to give the 3.75” line a run for its money. As staunch proponents of Hasbro’s 3.75” for more years than you could possibly imagine, it is with apprehensive and bittersweet caution that we feel that the 6” line is the new 3.75” line.... (read the full review)

Sandtrooper - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#03)
Is there any other character from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope that is more symbolic to the film than the Sandtrooper? More specifically, it was the squad leader (with the orange pauldron) that left indelible marks on our memories as kids when we fell in love with the Imperial troopers from the Galactic Empire.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 - TBS - Six Inch Figures (#04)
We genuinely applaud Hasbro’s efforts for the first wave of The Black Series 6” line. But perhaps they got a little overzealous with trying to give collectors a sampling of too many differing Star Wars characters’ body types in the inaugural wave.... (read the full review)

Slave I (Boba Fett’s Spaceship) - TVC - Vehicles (Exclusive)
What a beautiful mess the Slave I (Boba Fett’s Spaceship) Amazon.com exclusive vehicle is. It's its own oxymoron. It’s far from perfect mind you, but there is something powerful that the nostalgic Kenner replicas do for Star Wars collectors that no other toy can. It transports our collective minds to a time when things were much simpler and when we didn’t have to worry about adult things like paying the bills and putting a roof over our heads.... (read the full review)

Yak Face - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
The biggest surprise of the Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line was the Gamorrean Guard Premier Guild Member exclusive released in 2013 which not only was placed on a The Power Of The Force card back, but also came with a real metal coin.... (read the full review)

See-Threepio (C-3PO) - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
If you’re a collector of 12” figures, is there anything more rewarding than having the complete dozen of vintage Kenner 12-backs in your collection in one-sixth scale? Some collectors may be hard pressed to find something that tickles their nostalgia bone greater than this.... (read the full review)

Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
All those who grew up with the original Kenner Star Wars figures knew what an absolute joy and nightmare their Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) action figure was. It was an incredible action figure with an awesome clicking noise made from turning his dome, but at the same time it was a disappointment because he had to stay out of the water like a kid with tubes in his ears at the beach because of the paper decal that gave his all of his panels and details.... (read the full review)

Shaak Ti - Premium Format Figures
At this point we just don’t know how it’s possible anymore that Sideshow Collectibles can successively make the latest Premium Format Figure better than the last, but it’s true. They’ve brought forth plenty of well-represented characters across the entire Star Wars saga into this collectible format.... (read the full review)

Magnitude (An Admiral Ackbar Mini Bust) - Mini Busts
Obviously Admiral Ackbar is a member of the Rebel Alliance, but did you ever expect to see him in classic military garb? Apparently artist Steven Daily did and painted a gorgeous piece of artwork which showcases this very thing. “Magnitude” (An Admiral Ackbar Mini Bust) is a clever collectible designed by the artists at Gentle Giant Ltd. who were directly inspired by Mr. Daily’s artwork to create a niche Star Wars collectible.... (read the full review)

C-3PO (McQuarrie Concept) - Mini Busts
What San Diego Comic Con would be complete without a McQuarrie concept Mini Bust by Gentle Giant Ltd.? They certainly have been making it a habit annually by releasing a fantastic Mini Bust collectible based on the late Ralph McQuarrie.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 (The Clone Wars) - Maquettes
While a great deal of attention has been paid to The Clone Wars, there haven’t been very many accurately designed products based on this series. You’re probably wondering if we neglected Hasbro’s rich line of action figures, but we have not. Hasbro has actually created what they refer to as hybrid action figures.... (read the full review)

Pre Vizsla (The Clone Wars) - Maquettes
Fans of Mandalorians were overwhelmed with elation when they discovered how far season 2 of The Clone Wars would delve into their history and culture. Up to that time there were very few visuals that helped to talk about their story.... (read the full review)

Han Solo [Large Head] - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
You have to hand it to Gentle Giant Ltd., who seems to be the licensee with the strongest connection to longtime Star Wars collectors. Like Hasbro, Gentle Giant Ltd. knows the power of “vintage” packaging, but because they’re significantly limited with what they can produce under the Star Wars banner, they didn’t allow that to let them stumble and still created an amazing collection of the the original Kenner action figures, but at a jumbo scale....
