Research Droids Reviews: July 17, 2013 – August 13, 2013

Anakin Skywalker And 501st Legion Trooper (Coruscant) - SW [DV/ROTS] - Mission Series (MS02)
One of the biggest inconsistency issues Hasbro has is how they label Anakin Skywalker in the basic figure line. For collectors, our request for how Hasbro designates these action figures often originates from our “anal-retentivity” based on the moment he became Darth Vader in Episode III.... (read the full review)

Clone Trooper - SW [DV/ROTS] - Saga Legends (SL02)
Send in the clones! That must have been what the top level executive ordered the Hasbro boys’ development team for the 2013 Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] line. Understandably, clone troopers are a big deal for younger Star Wars fans.... (read the full review)

Super Battle Droid - SW [DV/ROTS] - Saga Legends (SL05)
As the collecting culture moves more and more to frequent outburst of anger towards Hasbro for the new directions they’re taking the basic figure lines, it’s nice to know that even if a line like the revisited 2013 Saga Legends line isn’t for you, that a figure like the Super Battle Droid may pique your interest.... (read the full review)

Boba Fett [Episode VI] - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd has developed an incredible Boba Fett [Episode VI] Mini Bust based on his appearance from Return of The Jedi. It’s been relegated to a Convention Exclusive only at the moment. But knowing Gentle Giant Ltd. as well as we do, you may expect to see this released a little bit differently for the general market.... (read the full review)

Boba Fett And Han Solo In Carbonite - TBS - Six Inch Figures (Exclusive)
The Black Series is here. And its brought with it an all-new scale. Hasbro developed this alternate series of action figures with, what they claim, the collector in mind. Controversial, anticipated and cautiously optimistic are words that best describe the line.... (read the full review)

Power Droid - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
There are some Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures that will make you want to jump in on this format more than others. A good example of this would be the Power Droid. Maybe its perhaps Hasbro has avoided the Lars’ homestead version like the plague in the modern action figure line.... (read the full review)

Asajj Ventress (Sith Apprentice) - CW - Basic (’03 #47)
After Attack Of The Clones ran its course in theaters, a brand new multimedia event simply called Clone Wars came into fruition that began telling the events that transpired in between Episode II and Episode III. It was truly a multimedia event like no other because it introduced a plethora of new characters as well as new looks and roles of previously established characters.... (read the full review)

Saesee Tiin - CW - Basic (’03 #51)
The Clone Wars multimedia event was an extremely special time for lovers of the Expanded Universe. While there were novels and comics and other publications that began to form the story of the Clone Wars, a historic period of the Star Wars saga that until this point had never been told, it was Hasbro’s brainchild to create new versions of characters based on existing likenesses (but fresh for the Clone Wars) and introduce all-new characters for the very first time (which many believed were throwaway character concepts from the films.)..... (read the full review)

Yoda - CW - Basic (’03 #44)
Sometimes you really have to hand it to Hasbro. Their development team can come up with some pretty clever Expanded Universe takes on well-established characters from the Star Wars films. They also make the new versions of these characters relevant, by introducing a new accessory or a new feature that we may have not seen previously.... (read the full review)

Durge (Commander Of The Separatist Forces) - CW - Basic (’03 #46)
Every new Star Wars property needs a big, bad villain, doesn’t it? In each new Prequel Trilogy we are introduced to all-new villains. In the novels and comics we are introduced to other cool villains. So why would the Clone Wars multimedia event be any different? Thankfully it’s not.... (read the full review)

Kit Fisto - CW - Basic (’03 #49)
Any fan of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars micro-series fell deeply in love with the Battle of Mon Calamari sequence. It introduced fans to the finer traits of Kit Fisto. We learned he could breath underwater.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (General Of The Republic Army) - CW - Basic (’03 #45)
The realistic Clone Wars line, of which many are directly inspired from the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars micro-series, and bringing for the most part a new level of quality to the 3.75” basic figure line. Not all of the figure can be defined as absolute perfection, but Hasbro has stepped up the game for many of the figures in the line.... (read the full review)

Mace Windu (General Of The Republic Army) - CW - Basic (’03 #48)
The Clone Wars multimedia event reinvents some of our most favorite characters from the Star Wars universe. In order to make them more interesting, little things have been tweaked and additional items have been added to make the characters unique from how they appear in the Star Wars films.... (read the full review)

Anakin Skywalker - CW - Basic (’03 #42)
In Attack Of The Clones, we see a burgeoning Anakin Skywalker develop emotionally and spiritually as he develops a love for Padme Amidala as well as hone in on his skills in Force, respectively. That is all interrupted by the events that immediately transpire after the Battle of Geonosis as he quickly becomes involved in the tumultuous Clone Wars battles.... (read the full review)

Figrin D’an - Life Size Busts
Two categories of Star Wars characters that are always a safe bet for all licensees to take a risk manufacturing collectibles for include Jabba’s palace denizens and Chalmun’s cantina patrons. No matter what size, characters from these environments will always remain hot commodities for overzealous Star Wars fans who prefer the Original Trilogy to anything else.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker (Episode IV: A New Hope) [SDCC Exclusive] - Premium Format Figures
Should high-end collectors be excited or concerned that Sideshow Collectibles has already reused the Luke Skywalker Premium Format sculpt to make a “different enough” new version for a San Diego Comic Con exclusive? Actually, Sideshow did a great job in making the Luke Skywalker (Episode IV: A New Hope) [SDCC Exclusive] Premium Format Figure noticeably different from its original release.... (read the full review)

C-3PO And R2-D2 [Sideshow Exclusive] - Premium Format Figures
Let us get it out in the open right from the start. The C-3PO And R2-D2 Premium Format Figure set is a complete and utter rip-off and it actually infuriates us that high-end collectible have reached “unaffordable” status for the hoi polloi. We know the products are getting better and better and Sideshow Collectibles is trying to bring very complicated characters into this format, but something has got to give.... (read the full review)

Han Solo (Rebel Hero) - Premium Format Figures
So, Sideshow Collectibles is clearly on a learning curve with some of their earliest Premium Format Figures. Luke Skywalker (Episode IV: A New Hope) had its good points and bad points and now Han Solo (Rebel Hero) which is based on the general release Han Solo Premium Format Figures appears to be a few steps up from Luke Skywalker, but still a bit of a ways from perfection.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Premium Format Figures
Collectors of Sideshow Collectibles’ Premium Format Figures line knew that it was only a matter of time before they would produce Obi-Wan Kenobi to serve as the yang to Darth Vader’s yin. What’s more, they ensured that Obi-Wan Kenobi would be sculpted in a way so that he would be interactive with the Dark Lord of the Sith when you posed them next to each other.... (read the full review)

Padmé Amidala - TBS - Basic (#01)
Collectors aren’t a patient group of people, but you know if we wait long enough that Hasbro will eventually get to updating some of their earliest action figure efforts. Padmé Amidala in her battle-worn outfit while sustaining the multitudes of brutality in the Geonosis arena was in need of a major overhaul and it took Hasbro over a decade to get the redo out to us.... (read the full review)

Anakin Skywalker - TBS - Basic (#03)
You’ll find more often than not that third time is the charm in Hasbro’s quest to make a certain Star Wars character definitive. This especially applies to Anakin Skywalker based on his appearance from Attack Of The Clones. If you have been a longtime collector, you know that we got a fairly decent Episode II version of Anakin Skywalker in 2005’s ROTS Anakin Skywalker To Darth Vader Evolutions set.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker - TBS - Basic (#05)
You can tell how spoiled collectors have become in recent years just by how they immediately accept or reject an action figure without finding out exactly why a re-release (or in the case of The Black Series Luke Skywalker action figure, a refresh) is necessary.... (read the full review)

Biggs Darklighter - TBS - Basic (#04)
When 2007’s TAC Biggs Darklighter (Rebel Pilot) (30 14) was released, many collectors didn’t understand why Hasbro had taken so many shortcuts with it. As a character with an important role in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and Luke’s best friend, it seemed that we should have already received a super-articulated version of him at that point.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - TBS - Basic (#06)
There always has to be at minimum one Darth Vader action figure in every new line look. That’s just the way the Maker intended it to be. The Star Wars saga is all about him, so it makes perfect sense that he needs to see release after release as an action figure.... (read the full review)

Clone Trooper Sergeant - TBS - Basic (#02)
As soon as collectors found out Hasbro was designing the all-new phase I Clone Trooper (VC45) in The Vintage Collection, the questions starting pouring out about when we could expect the Clone Trooper officers as well. The first, Clone Trooper Lieutenant (VC109) was released in the second to the last final waves of The Vintage Collection lineup.... (read the full review)

Clone Pilot - TBS - Basic (#08)
Alright folks. This is crazy. One Star Wars action figure we didn’t expect to impress us was the Clone Pilot. And as cruel fate would have it, it’s become one of our most favorite figures from the inaugural wave. You already know all too well our affinity for 2011’s TVC Clone Trooper (VC45) figure.... (read the full review)

Biker Scout - TBS - Basic (#07)
So, you’re probably asking yourself did Star Wars collectors really need another Biker Scout. We probably didn’t. But each time Hasbro tackles what we had deemed as a definitive figure, they go and do something even better to it to blow the previous version out of the running.... (read the full review)

Rise Of Darth Vader, The - SW [DV/ROTS] - Exclusive
When you look at an exclusive multipack like The Rise Of Darth Vader in the year 2013 and the price is under $30, it pokes more holes in Hasbro’s scripted arguments that we can possibly notate. With action figures being downgraded to five points of articulation (for the sake of cost-cutting measures) and with the volume in the number of action figures that do get released per year diminishing like there is no tomorrow, a multipack exactly like The Rise Of Darth Vader proves that Hasbro isn’t giving us all of the pieces to the puzzle as to why they’ve stopped doing the things collectors want to see....
