SOTDS SL23 Snowtrooper Gets A New Paint Job....Again

Posted by Paul | January 03, 2011 at 11:27 PM ET

The original VTSC Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear) figure has gone through quite an evolution. JTA breaks down its various stages of metamorphosis for you. You may be surprised on just how many changes Hasbro actually made to this figure. And most recently, JTA discovered that December 2010 case assortments of the Saga Legends (SL23) figure has been revised once again. Want to know more? Then click through for more!

It almost seems as if Hasbro literally went full circle with the VTSC Imperial Snowtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear). It's gone through its share of paint application variations and they even retooled the figure (something we reported months ago in our Itemizing Differences column found HERE). After the VTSC figure, Hasbro repainted the Snowtrooper in the TAC Ultimate Battle Packs in November 2007. We haven't included those versions in this report. Just picture Snowtroopers stained in urine. (Sorry for the graphic visual, but that's exactly what they looked like.) The Snowtrooper experienced its most significant change in the 2009 Legacy Collection line (known as BD55). With an oddly painted helmet and a stance that made him very difficult to stand up, it was a few steps back from the VTSC figure and we questioned why Hasbro made such a drastic change on an already great figure.

2010 came around and we probably got the most variations of the Snowtrooper figure at once! Both the Hoth Assault Battle Packs set and the Saga Legends (SL23) figure brought collectors a much-improved and enhanced version of the original 2007 figure. The legs were retooled to get rid of the ridiculously wide stance and the helmet was more evenly painted with "dirt" even if it looked a tad heavy. A pristinely clean version of this same Snowtrooper was included in the spectacular Attack On Hoth multipack (which was a TARGET exclusive in November 2010). But the changes didn't stop there. Perhaps the most interesting turn of events would come a month later. Hasbro, for reasons unknown, cleaned up the Saga Legends Snowtrooper one more time in the December 2010 (and later) case assortments and gave it a paint job that most closely resembles the original 2007 VTSC figure. This full-circle action is slightly perplexing. But the best version in our opinion is this new and recently shipping SL23 Snowtrooper!!

We have provided multiple group pictures of all five variations in this report (excluding the 2007 TAC UBP version of course) as well as side by side comparisons of others to give me more visual depth to the changes Hasbro has made. Click on each picture for a larger photograph of each. Will Hasbro make any more updates to the Snowtrooper? That remains to be seen! We hope this latest version holds up over time because it's spectacular!
