Research Droids Reviews: January 16, 2013 – January 29, 2013

Boba Fett - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH24)
It was inevitable for Boba Fett to become a candidate for the Movie Heroes line wasn’t it? Actually, we’re surprised it took as long as it did to see him confirmed for the line. Part of the last wave of the 2012 Movie Heroes lineup, his future is uncertain because no online or brick and mortar store show that the wave in which he is part of will ever be available for pre-order.... Princess Leia - OTC - Basic (OTC #18)
One version of Princess Leia that Hasbro made us wait an “eternity” for was Princess Leia in her Bespin gown. You see, we never really got a “real” action figure version of her. Sure, she was released as part of the Princess Leia Collection.... (read the full review)

Cloud Car Pilot - OTC - Basic (OTC #19)
If there was one figure we were dying to buy from The Original Trilogy Collection, it was the long-awaited modern update of the Cloud Car Pilot. For reasons still unable to be explained, there are just some figures from the original Kenner lineup that Hasbro loves to ignore.... (read the full review)

Lobot - OTC - Basic (OTC #20)
For a Star Wars action figure that has been a peg-warmer since its original 1981 release, Hasbro sure likes to get out multiple versions of Lobot into the basic figure line. it’s something we haven’t been able to figure out really. Perhaps the much heckled “disco” version of Lobot from The Power Of The Force collection is the impetus for creating an all-new sculpt for The Original Trilogy Collection years later, but who really knows.... (read the full review)

Rebel Fleet Trooper - Mini Busts
If there is one fault that we’d like to resolved with Gentle Giant Ltd., it’s that we’d like to see their releases arrive at least close to the estimated date that they announce. Star Wars collecting is a completely different environment today than it was at the opening of the new decade.... (read the full review)

Dengar - Mini Busts
Not everybody in the Galaxy Far, Far Away can afford to hire Boba Fett. Second-tier crime lords or government officials turn to Dengar. Despite his lackluster reputation, Darth Vader brought Dengar to the bridge of the Executor for a very specific reason. Dengar was grievously injured in a swoop race against Han Solo and has held a grudge against the smuggler ever since.... (read the full review)

Lando Calrissian In Skiff Guard Disguise - Mini Busts
The Kenner Star Wars action figure line changed as we knew it in 1983 with the release of Return Of The Jedi in theaters. For the first time ever, main characters came with disguises and left an indelible mark on our childhood. The added feature of removable helmets is a detail that has permeated so strongly that it’s lasted into our adulthood collecting days.... (read the full review)

Bossk (Bounty Hunter) - Scum & Villainy - 1:6 Scale Figures
We’ve all been “Bossked” thanks to the brilliance of the artisans at Sideshow Collectibles. We’re constantly amazed that Sideshow Collectibles finds ways to outdo themselves time and time again. Admittedly, we’ve been deflated over the last couple of years since they were on a kick to produce so many characters for their Militaries Of Star Wars sub-collection.... (read the full review)

Captain Rex - Premium Format Figures
Can too much of a good thing really end up feeling like too much? Not all collectors feel this way, but we have to confess that being inundated with clones for the last few years by Sideshow Collectibles has made their products lines feel a tad too stale in some respects.... (read the full review)

Battle Droid - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH22)
If the last couple of years have taught us anything, it’s that sometimes really good figures become victims due to a combination of bad decisions. Before we explain let us clarify that when we say good figures, we mean figures that are aesthetically pleasing action figures whether they’re intended for kids or collectors (or both).... (read the full review)

General Veers - Mini Busts
General Veers is a character that a multitude of Mini Bust collectors have been begging Gentle Giant Ltd. to produce years ago. We all were elated when the announcement was made and it was confirmed that he would finally be part of the line. Admittedly, we personally were disappointed that he would come as in the “deluxe” format with multiple interchangeable parts.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker: X-Wing Pilot - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
Just like you remember them, only bigger! There couldn’t be a more perfect tagline for the Jumbo Vintage Kenner line than that, can there? When first introduced, response was mixed. And collectors began wondering what Gentle Giant Ltd. planned to do with the line. Within a few short years since the line was announced and the first figure (Boba Fett) was released, Gentle Giant Ltd. has chosen characters from across all three Original Trilogy films and only nearly ever available card back type made by Kenner back in the day.... (read the full review)

OOM-9 Battle Droid Commander - Militaries Of Star Wars - 1:6 Scale Figures
One thing we have to consistently commend Sideshow Collectibles for is that they fervently work through their learning curves. Every time they introduce a new body type they are inevitably things about it that need perfecting and updating. And with very few exceptions, they do improve them to satisfying standards that the demanding public finds acceptable.... (read the full review)

S.T.A.P. And Battle Droid - Militaries Of Star Wars - 1:6 Scale Figures
It goes without saying that Sideshow Collectibles continually finds ways to impress collectors of their 1:6 Scale Figures line. Just when we think they really can’t do more to wow us, they do. In all honesty, they really don’t think that far outside the box. But when the concepts come together and an idea transitions into the fruit of their labor, the high-end products they manufacture are some of the most impressive Star Wars collectibles you could purchase for your collection....
