Research Droids Reviews: September 26, 2012 – October 9, 2012

Emperor's Royal Guard - TVC - Basic (VC105)
It’s finally come to pass. One of the most recognized characters associated with “Return Of The Jedi”has finally received The Vintage Collection treatment. That of course is in and of itself reason to celebrate, but we wonder if the final action figure is something that all collectors will fully embrace.... (read the full review)

Nien Nunb - TVC - Basic (VC106)
It seems that poor Nien Nunb is incapable of escaping controversy or more accurately “bad things” in general. Firstly, his name has been constantly misspelled since 1983. Nien Numb, Nine Nunb, Nine Numb, Nein Nunb and Nein Numb are all examples we have seen published in various articles, books and web searches and we’re sure there are other variations we haven't listed here that have sadly butchered his name as well.... (read the full review)

Weequay - TVC - Basic (VC107)
Wave 16 of The Vintage Collection has some incredible gems in it. For a wave to be graced with so many spectacular action figures is certainly not unprecedented, but it is always to get great gifts like this from Hasbro – even if they don't make it to retail liek this wave will not.... Orrimaarko (Prune Face) - TVC - Basic (VC114)
Hasbro is really becoming more and more clever with how they are reusing previously existing, yet excellent sculpts in the basic figure line. One of the action figures in the “final” wave of The Vintage Collection is one of these said figures, and while he looks a lot like the figure from which he is based, Hasbro’s ability to make “old” action figures “new” again is uncanny.... (read the full review)

Lumat - TVC - Basic (VC104)
If you tried to tell us about another Ewok that causes more confusion than Lumat, we would stop you and tell you that you were wrong and no other Ewok exists that fits that criteria. Because quite honestly, no Ewok causes more confusion than Lumat. The most confusing thing here is that this action figure wasn’t determined to officially be Lumat until very recently (in the modern era).... (read the full review)

Ahsoka - TVC - Basic (VC102)
If there is one reason that would justify Hasbro abandoning the animated The Clone Wars line altogether for collectors so that they could focus their energies producing these characters in realistic style, it would unequivocally be Ahsoka (VC102). Before you hang us, you need to know that Ahsoka is a quite possibly one of the finest action figures of 2012 period.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi - TVC - Basic (VC103)
The Clone Wars is taking an interesting but very exciting turn. Hasbro has decided that the animated The Clone Wars line is no longer being made with collectors in mind. Take that as you’d like, but Hasbro, going forward, will be saving super-articulation for realistically styled characters from Filoni’s The Clone Wars television show (which will subsequently be released in collector-focused lines).... (read the full review)

Republic Trooper (The Old Republic) - TVC - Basic (VC113)
Jace Malcolm was introduced to Star Wars fans in The Old Republic trailers. But other than that, we only know what Wookieepedia tells us about him and his role in The Old Republic video game. What we do know conclusively instead is that Hasbro has crafted another great character based on this video game as an action figure in the very last wave of [the first phase of] The Vintage Collection.... Aurra Sing - TVC - Basic (VC73)
The opening 2012 The Vintage Collection wave wasn’t the first batch of Episode I focused action figures planned you know. We wanted to set that record straight. Way before The Phantom Menace 3D was officially given a release date, Hasbro had four figures already in development for The Vintage Collection: Aurra Sing, Mawhonic (Podracer Pilot), Naboo Pilot and the Gungan Warrior.... (read the full review)

Mawhonic (Podracer Pilot) - TVC - Basic (VC71)
When the Gran Podracer Mawhonic was released in the Discover The Force line in January of 2012, collectors were helpless to not notice how short he appeared. Was the “rough and “tough” Podracer actually a dwarf? Well, it turned out that he is. Yet it couldn’t detract from the affection we quickly developed for him in our collections.... (read the full review)

Naboo Pilot - TVC - Basic (VC72)
Perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated figures in 2012 was the Naboo Pilot. The figure made its debut in the Discover The Force Walmart exclusive basic figure line, but it was planned for The Vintage Collection long before it was added to the former. Another one of the “delayed” The Vintage Collection, his entrance into the line was stayed because Hasbro needed to quickly produce a line of 12 basic figures that were to be exclusive to Walmart in their Discover The Force promotion.... (read the full review)

Gungan Warrior - TVC - Basic (VC74)
The Gungan Warrior isn’t a Gungan Warrior at all. The figure released first in the Discover The Force line at Walmart and now as a beautiful The Vintage Collection release is anything but a Gungan Warrior. He is a Gungan scout and we really wish Hasbro had caught this in time before producing card back artwork that would forever immortalize him as a Gungan Warrior.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH21)
So, are Movie Heroes figure coming with less articulation or not? If you’re Luke Skywalker then the answer to that question is a resounding no. Hasbro has changed the way they are presenting figures in kid-focused lines. Articulation has gone out the window and core character will be coming to the buying population is a more simplified manner.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - SW [TPM 3D] - Movie Heroes (MH20)
It was only a matter of time before Hasbro knocked out Darth Vader with a light-up lightsaber for the Movie Heroes line. Admittedly, the technology Hasbro has incorporated into the light-up figure is rather impressive, although not entirely perfect yet. But the technology that is available to them has been put to good use and for the most part we’re fans of this action feature, if not for anything more than a novelty on a classic Star Wars character....
