Yeah, We Now Have Official Word Regarding The Nien Nunb Issue

Posted by Paul | September 28, 2012 at 08:15 AM ET

Wow! We have official word from a StarWars.com contributor this time! Click through to see a "insider perspective" on the actual facts surrounding Nien Nunb as Tim Veekhoven from Belgium, contributor to the Star Wars Databank, in addition to many other things, gives us his expert rundown of Nien Nunb! This is definitely an exciting update!

Hello guys,

My name is Tim Veekhoven from Belgium, also known as Sompeetalay. I’m president of TeeKay-421, the Belgian Star Wars Fanclub, administrator of Yodapedia, founder of the ‘Star Wars Sourcebooks page’ on Facebook and author of four (former) Databank entries on SW.com (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tim_Veekhoven). Just wanted to let you know that I’m no stranger to dealing with names from the movies.

Despite of what has been written about Nien Nunb not being the Sullustan in his B-Wing pilot outfit, officially he still is. Three recent sources have proven that Nunb is indeed also the Sullustan in his B-Wing outfit. The first one is a Q&A question in ‘Star Wars Insider 112’ (page 63) that Leland Chee has answered. The second is Nunb’s entry in ‘The Star Wars Character Encyclopedia’ by DK where Nunb is depicted in his B-Wing outfit as his main photo. The third one is ‘Star Wars: Head-to-Head Tag Teams’ by Pablo Hidalgo. That book also shows Nien in his B-Wing outfit.

Now, don’t be mistaken. This is actually an obvious retcon. If you check the ‘Action Figure Archive’ you’ll read on page 49 that in that book the Sullustan with the B-Wing pilot attire is actually Ten Numb. But the other sources are more recent so they outrank the older source. I believe it was done in order to be able to show Nien Nunb entirely. I have never seen a full picture of Nunb in his classic clothes like he appears in Home One’s hangar (and in the cockpit of course, but since he was a puppet in those scenes it’s obvious that they can’t have a full shot of him in the Falcon). I’m pretty certain that these two Sullustans were not really meant to be the same character during the production of RotJ (there are multiple Sullustans in RotJ, but most of them didn’t appear in the final film like you already showed). Back in those days, there was little care for continuity, names and identities.

At the end all that matters are official publications and what they confirm and don’t confirm. So until another official source says otherwise, Nunb is indeed the Sullustan in his B-Wing outfit. And because of his Gentle Giant statue, I don’t think they’ll ever retcon this again.

All the best from Belgium,

Tim Veekhoven 'Sompeetalay'
