Toy Fair 2010 - The Vintage Collection

The most talked about figures from Hasbro's presentation is without a doubt the Vintage Collection. It builds on the Kenner Star Wars legacy, but also keeps true to Hasbro's modern vintage line in terms of presentation. What are we in store for?

While Hasbro's modern takes on the Vintage line during the OTC, TSC and TAC lines were limited to only a few figures, Hasbro will be taking on considerably more figures than the vintage components of any of these lines tackled. The Vintage Collection is set to run for 2 years, launching in August of 2010. The target for 2010 Vintage Collection basic figures is a total of 37 figures. There will be 27 all new or retooled figures, with another 10 being offered as Greatest Hits figures.

The price point for this collection is set at $7.99 per figure. This is a price drop from previous vintage figure offering, but that is due to the fact that the new collection will not be shipped in the expensive plastic clamshells. Figures will be on the classic 6" x 9" card with the classic Kenner style graphics. And the figures will hang on the pegs from a butterfly shaped punch on the top of the card. These punches have been reinforced with plastic in order to prolong the peg life of the figures. But this may present challenges to MOMC collectors who want a pristine cardback in which the peghole has not been punched out.

Figure numbering will also be brought to the VINTAGE COLLECTION. Each VINTAGE COLLECTION figure will have a VC number on the back of the card. JTA will report on that numbering scheme as it becomes available.

The line will launch in August, 2010 with the line's biggest wave which centers around THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. From that point collectors can expect a total of 4 waves this year, with a new wave being released every 6 weeks. The movie themes of the waves are set to follow the EMPIRE wave include:

Wave 2 - Revenge Of The Sith (scheduled for late August 2010)
Wave 3 - Return Of The Jedi
Wave 4 - Attack Of The Clones

There are also set to be movie themed waves for both A NEW HOPE and THE PHANTOM MENACE, but those are not scheduled to be released until 2011. The number of figures that WERE on hand for display were limited to THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK wave.

The EMPIRE wave will consist of 11 figures. Most of these figures will be all new, but some will be slight repaints/retools. And each card will feature the bold movie episode name in a red font over black, with the silver Star Wars logo wrapped around that text. Here's the character rundown:

      4-LOM
      AT-AT Commander
      Boba Fett
      Dack Ralter |
      Darth Vader
      Dengar
      Han Solo (Echo Base Outfit)
      Leia (Hoth Outfit)
      Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues)
      See-Threepio (C-3PO)
      (Twin Pod) Cloud Car Pilot

Notable items about this wave of figures?

-4-LOM appears to be a repainted version of 2007's TAC figure

-The AT-AT Commander is an all new figure. It may feature some parts that were originally seen in the TLC Captain Needa figure. Most notably, this figure appears to be an homage to the Kenner vintage AT-AT Commander as both the vintage figure and this new offering share the same card artwork. Additionally, this AT-AT Commander has similar rank insignia to the vintage Kenner figure.

-Boba Fett seems to be a slight repaint 2009's BD36 Boba Fett. This version also appears to have a different blaster from previous offerings.

-Dack Ralter is an all new figure that may owe a little of it's construction to late 2009's Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder Pilot). Of course, Dack doesn't come with a lightsaber but does include a removable helmet and blaster. But his release is very much a coordinated effort to get Luke Skywalker's snowspeeder gunner out in time for the release of the Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder vehicle.

-Darth Vader is a new figure, and this one delivers on the three piece helmet that had been hinted at back in 2008. This version of the Dark Lord will have a seperate neckpiece, faceplate and helmet.

-Dengar delivers on premium articulation now being available on ALL of the Bounty Hunters seen on the bridge of the Executor. This is an all new sculpt.

-Han Solo (Echo Base Outfit) presents Captain Solo in a version that has never been seen before. It offers Han from a scene in the Echo base hangar in the infamous parka (yes, it's brown) over what's become known as his "Bespin gear". This version also includes a welding mask and torch.

- Leia (Hoth Outfit) is a much needed upgrade of a figure that was originally released in the POTF2 era, but is now presented with the same cardback artwork as seen in the Kenner vintage line.

-Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) appears to be an upgrade of 2007's VTAC Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues). There are definitely new parts at work with the lower body, head sculpt and utility belt. It remains unclear if Hasbro upgraded the upper body though, but the deco of this figure is drastically different from the 2007 figure.

-See-Threepio (C-3PO) presents our favorite protocol droid on the classic cardback from 1978's STAR WARS line but with the EMPIRE logo. As for the figure? This is a new sculpt of Threepio with more of a matte finish. And it also features some removable body plates which reveal the wiring within.

-(Twin Pod) Cloud Car Pilot is an all new figure. It features a significantly different look from 2004's OTC Cloud Car Pilot and considerably more articulation. You may notice differences between the version in the Hasbro slideshow and the version seen in the package on the exhibit floor. The version which features the mustache will be the version released at retail, as the one on display did not have final paint apps.

Going forward in the Vintage line collectors can expect to see a range of classic characters presented on the vintage style card for the first time. For instance, coming up in the EPISODE II wave will be a General Grievous figure, something that has never been issued on a vintage style card. Stay tuned for more on the VINTAGE COLLECTION as JTA continues to report from the 2010 New York International Toy Fair.
