Research Droids Reviews: December 4, 2013 – December 17, 2013

C-3PO (Protocol Droid) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #04)
It’s quite astounding how sharply a character’s background story can turn once the established cannon is jeopardized by a new “more important” storyline like a movie or something. That’s a very verbose way of saying that what we know about of a character seems to change at the drop of a hat anymore in Star Wars.... (read the full review)

Clone Trooper (Republic Gunship Pilot) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #49)
The 2002 Star Wars “Saga” Republic Gunship got released in April 2002, but it wasn’t until the middle of the Fall that year that Star Wars collectors received the Clone Trooper (Republic Gunship Pilot) figure in the basic figure line to “drive” it.... (read the full review)

Royal Guard (Coruscant Security) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #19)
Did you know that there is a difference between a Red Guard and a Royal Guard? There is, but that difference can only be gauged by the time period you’re discussing. The Red Guard transitioned into the Royal Guard after the formation of the Galactic Empire, under the tyranny of Emperor Palpatine.... (read the full review)

Jango Fett (Final Battle) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #31)
Jango Fett (Final Battle) is a bittersweet figure. It may have just as many things going for it and it does going against it. Granted, any action figure with a cool “beheading” feature is typically accepted by Star Wars collectors with great anticipation, but Hasbro made the sculpt in such a way that it makes it very difficult to position him in an upright fashion.... (read the full review)

Tusken Raider (Female With Tusken Child) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #08)
Wait! There are female Tusken Raiders? And they have children? What were we thinking? Star Wars often has a male-dominated mentality which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but sometimes it can be a shock to the system when we find out that female counterparts look differently than the males.... (read the full review)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Starfighter Pilot) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #36)
Collectors will often find that an action figure is worth buying solely for the parts contained within it. This is especially true for many of the figures in the Star Wars “Saga” line. In a line that has a focus on action features over aesthetics, 2002 through 2004 in many instances wasn’t collector friendly.... (read the full review)

Yoda (Jedi High Council) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #53)
One of the more unsettling things about Episode I for many fans was the drastically different appearance of Yoda. While George Lucas attempted to keep the story seamless by using a puppet for the “younger” Yoda, many felt the extreme difference between the Episode I puppet and the Original Trilogy puppet were just too much.... (read the full review)

Taun We (Kamino Cloner) - SW [S - P1] - Basic (’02 #25)
It was a sole tiny saber dart was the beginning breadcrumb that led Obi-Wan Kenobi down the trail to a clone facility in Tipoca City on Kamino. After some debate on whether the system even existed, Obi-Wan Kenobi took R4-P17 and his Jedi starfighter for a ride to where the stars were clustering on faith and discovered a very perplexing human-making factory.... Obi-Wan Kenobi And Darth Maul (Mandalore) - SW [DV/ROTS] - Mission Series (MS06)
Uh. What can be said of the action figures in the Star Wars [Darth Vader/Revenge Of The Sith] line? A whole new approach is being taken now. Figures come with five points of articulation if were lucky, and articulation and accessories have gone the way of the dodo bird, save the strict collector-focused products.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 And C-3PO (Tantive IV) - SW [DV/ROTS] - Mission Series (MS05)
The Mission Series isn’t that bad of a concept if we’re honest. Two-packs of figures with direct ties to each other are something we have always embraced in the collecting community. Droid FactoryGeonosis Arena ShowdownComic Packs and many other sub-lines and exclusives have taken this format to the stratosphere, and as a result we have received some very impressive action figures throughout the years.... (read the full review)

Han Solo And Chewbacca (Death Star) - SW [DV/ROTS] - Mission Series (MS07)
Sure to be controversial to many, the new Original Trilogy characters from the Mission Series line reinvents the action figures we grew up with a modernly classic approach. The takes on these figures are quality, but may not have nearly enough bells and whistles for detailed collectors. In fact, some collectors have no interest in seeing characters in this fashion at all.... (read the full review)

Evolution Of Darth Vader, The - SW [DV/ROTS] - Exclusive
Let’s just get it out right away. Hasbro. We do NOT need anymore Anakin Skywalker multipacks.... and we can go years without needing a basic Anakin Skywalker figure either. On paper, The Evolution Of Darth Vader exclusive four pack of figures should have been good. But with the recent history we all lived, it’s more than fair to say that Anakin Skywalker has been released with overkill status.... (read the full review)

Bossk (Bounty Hunter) - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
Now that Gentle Giant Ltd. has completed the original 21-backs of Kenner figures in the jumbo scale, they’re plowing right into characters based on The Empire Strikes Back. As with any licensee wise decision, some of the earliest character focus in on the bounty hunters.... (read the full review)

IG-88 (Bounty Hunter) - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
Do you ever wonder how Genetle Giant Ltd considers which of the original Kenner vintage figures that had running change variants to copy over into their popular Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures line? They’ve captured some remarkable ones to date like Han Solo [Small Head]Yoda, The Jedi Master and the Yak Face Tri-Logo versions.... (read the full review)
