Research Droids Reviews: April 24, 2013 – May 7, 2013

Tusken Raider - Mini Busts
What’s to be said of the Tusken Raider Mini Bust? A classic character from the Original Trilogy is always appreciated, but what happens if things from a qualitative perspective go a bit awry? Gentle Giant Ltd. definitely gets an “A” for effort with the Tusken Raider Mini Bust, but sadly we’d have to give them lower marks in execution.... (read the full review)

Jawas - Mini Busts
Sometimes artistic license and creativity outweigh screen accuracy by a landslide. And this directly applies to the Jawas Mini Bust duo that was released by Gentle Giant Ltd. First off, you should know that the Jawas inn this two-pack aren’t completely perfect, but the concept of them is so engaging and exciting that you’ll probably overlook the few faults they do have.... (read the full review)

Stormtrooper - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. wasted really no time getting the first Imperial soldier into the Mini Bust line. It wasn’t until year three that the Stormtrooper Mini Bust was finally released to a very eager collecting crowd and the final product followed in similar footsteps to the very popular and varied phase II Clone Trooper Mini Busts released a year earlier.... (read the full review)

Blackhole Stormtrooper - Mini Busts
There was a while when collectors believed that Shadow Stormtroopers and Blackhole Stormtroopers were two different characters. More recently the canon has changed and websites like Wookieepedia confirm that they are indeed the same character. There are times throughout our respective Star Wars experiences when a unique Star Wars character becomes all the rage.... (read the full review)

Mara Jade - Mini Busts
By the time 2006 arrived, Gentle Giant Ltd. had a healthy supply of exclusive Mini Busts released. They kept the trend going hard and strong in 2006 as well with quite a few exclusive Mini Busts reserved for summer conventions. One Mini Bust, Mara Jade, was a long-awaited character that fans of the Expanded Universe were chomping at the bit to see released.... (read the full review)

Darth Malak - Mini Busts
Has anyone else noticed a trend that Gentle Giant Ltd. often takes cues from Hasbro on when to develop a character for their Mini Bust line? If you look over the action figures that Hasbro releases in a given year, you’ll probably find multiple examples of Mini Busts that Gentle Giant Ltd. will release right behind them.... (read the full review)

Jango Fett [Version 2] - Mini Busts
When Gentle Giant Ltd. first developed the Mini Bust line in 2002, it seemed as if they didn’t have a completely solidified plan of how to execute the line. The first “wave” of Mini Busts (again, all released in 2002) were “busts” in the truest sense in that they were bisections of the character from the waist up and without arms.... Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi - OTC - Vintage
The greatest announcement of 2004 wasn’t that the Star Wars Original Trilogy was getting released on DVD. No, it was that Hasbro was releasing a dozen all-new sculpted action figures and placing them on vintage styled card backs just like the ones that were available to Star Wars fans when they were younglings themselves.... (read the full review)

Han Solo - OTC - Vintage
Hasbro has released the most incredible version of Han Solo that they will likely never be able to beat…. ever. The “Vintage” Original Trilogy Collection Han Solo action figure is breathtaking, stunning, gorgeous, brilliant, and about a thousand other positive adjectives that don’t readily come to our minds.... (read the full review)

Princess Leia Organa - OTC - Vintage
oor Princess Leia Organa! She didn’t get a fair start in the modern Star Wars action figure line. Hailed as “monkey faced Leia” in 1995, the first modern attempt of her in The Power Of The Force line proved to collectors that we should be concerned about how well Hasbro could imitate likeness in the mid nineties.... (read the full review)

Luke Skywalker - OTC - Vintage
The release of The “Vintage” Original Trilogy Collection Luke Skywalker action figure is bittersweet. How can an action figure have so many incredibly positive elements, but then possesses some things that make us wish that it underwent some further tweaking before getting released? That’s pretty much where we stand with 2004’s VOTC Luke Skywalker action figure.... (read the full review)

See-Threepio (C-3PO) - OTC - Vintage
Sometimes as Star Wars collectors we have to sacrifice articulation for aesthetics. The problem is that so many of us are unwilling to accept this sentiment. But if you carefully inspect the all-new sculpt of 2004’s VOTC See-Threepio (C-3PO) action figure, you’ll find that the sculptors at Hasbro really did a fine job with it, even if it comes minimally articulated.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader - OTC - Vintage
It’s pretty much fact that we will never go long without a new Darth Vader action figure getting added into the basic figure line. Each year Hasbro finds new and improved ways to get this character to kids and collectors. No matter how monotonous his appearance at retail may be, he sells without question and there doesn’t seem to be and end insight of how many Hasbro can release without it backing up and clogging pegs.... (read the full review)

Lando Calrissian - OTC - Vintage
Before 2004, Hasbro had produced two versions of Lando Calrissian (based on his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back) for the basic figure line. In fact, the very first modern Lando Calrissian action figure was one of Hasbro’s earliest efforts. That figure contain exaggerated proportions and quickly aged out as obsolete before the second version was released in the Power Of The Jedi line in 2001.... (read the full review)
