Research Droids Reviews: February 13, 2013 – February 26, 2013

Imperial Trooper - OTC - Basic (OTC #38)
The behavior of Star Wars fans is mind-boggling at best. In a very surprising move, Hasbro decided to add a last minute 38th figure to The Original Trilogy Collection lineup. Not an official Fans’ Choice Poll exactly, Hasbro wanted to illicit collectors’ opinions and set up a voting center on their website for Star Wars collectors from all over to choose their own poison for the final figure in the collection.... Sandtrooper (Tatooine Search) - OTC - Basic ('05 #12)
One of the biggest surprises in The Original Trilogy Collection came after the official basic figure line had ended. After all 38 figure were released in 2004, Hasbro decided to keep a “Post” The Original Trilogy Collection line in circulation until 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith line made a big splash in April of that year.... Holographic Princess Leia - OTC - Basic (Exclusive)
Isn’t it a shame when Hasbro decides to make a novelty figure like Holographic Princess Leia that they don’t use the best possible sculpt? The 2005 San Diego Comic Con exclusive Princess Leia Organa figure was a long time coming for avid Star Wars collectors, but instead of using the excellent 2004 VOTC Princess Leia Organa figure, they dusted off 1998’s POTF2 Princess Leia Organa (All New Likeness) figure and casted it in clear purple plastic to simulate a holographic effect.... Royal Guard - Mini Busts
One of Gentle Giant Ltd.’s greatest skills is their ability to kill two birds with one stone. Whether they’re able to work up two different characters while utilizing one major sculpt, or just simply create a slight variant geared for PGMs, they are able find innovative ways to help save on tooling costs while consistently bringing new high quality products to the market.... (read the full review)

Senate Guard - Mini Busts
Gentle Giant Ltd. had one goal in mind when they designed the Senate Guard/Royal Guard Mini Busts and that was to amortize sculpting costs while creating two distinct characters for the line. They succeeded greatly in this particular example. Sharing similar base sculpts, they Senate Guard and Royal Guard were shipped together in the same case at a ratio of 1:3 and 2:3 respectively.... Jango Fett's Slave I - SW [Y/AOTC] - Vehicles
There is really only one single word to describe the new approach taken for the Class II vehicles line. And that word would be “enigma”. It may not be an adjective, but this noun best represents the direction Star Wars vehicles are headed in 2013. In an era where Hasbro has expressed a need to keep tooling costs at an all-time low, they ironically found it fit to develop three all-new tools for the first wave of the reduced scale vehicle line instead of digging deeply into their parts vault and dust off something that was already "done".... Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter - SW [Y/AOTC] - Vehicles
Man oh man. What has the Class II vehicle line come to now that Hasbro’s believes they are developing these for kids instead of collectors? Did Hasbro honestly forget that they made normal sized vehicles for kids in the vintage Kenner line that ran from 1978 to 1985?.... (read the full review)

Snowtrooper - Militaries Of Star Wars - 1:6 Scale Figures
Is Sideshow Collectibles actually making the next 1:6 Scale Figure better than the last, or are we just more impressed that they’re giving clones a rest and digging a little bit deeper into the Original Trilogy now? The character selection in recent memory is a dream come true.... (read the full review)

Boba Fett (Return Of The Jedi Ver.) - ARTFX+
When you’ve been in the business for 60 years you would assume that if you couldn’t master your craft by now that maybe you should call it quits, right? Thankfully, this is not an issue for the people at Kotobukiya who have managed for six decades to provide amazing stuff for the high-end collectibles market.... (read the full review)

Darth Vader (Anakin Skywalker Returns) - ARTFX+
Darth Vader, the return of Anakin Skywalker. Just like Hasbro’s Resurgence Of The Jedi Battle Packs set from late 2009, that sounds whole lot more like a sequel to a Star Wars film than a collectible product. But that’s what the fine folks at Kotobukiya decided to call their very nice Darth Vader (Return Of Anakin Skywalker) ARTFX+ vinyl statue.... (read the full review)

Gamorrean Guard - Jumbo Vintage Kenner Figures
With each successive release, Gentle Giant Ltd. continually impresses us. And we’re not exactly sure how this is possible because they’ve established their collectible formats solidly in stone. So at this point in the game we shouldn’t be expecting much new from their long-running formats.... (read the full review)

Stormtrooper - OTC - Basic (OTC #16)
If you were fortunate enough to be in the collector age range in 1999, you probably are very aware of the gifts Hasbro gave to us as they began wrapping up the long-running The Power Of The Force line. In preparation for the Episode I line, Hasbro worked in the Comm Tech technology as a pack-in premium in the final figures of The Power Of The Force line.... (read the full review)

R2-D2 (Commemorating 60 Years Of Excellence) - ARTFX+
When you see a Star Wars collectible with a 60th Anniversary label on it, the first thing you probably think is that Star Wars hasn’t been around for 60 years. You’re right it hasn’t. Kotobukiya however has celebrated 60 years in October 2012 and there is cause for celebration.... (read the full review)

Snowtrooper - OTC - Basic (OTC #25)
Whenever Hasbro creates a new collection of Star Wars action figures, it’s a good bet that there will be a Snowtrooper somewhere within the mix. As fate would have it, a Snowtrooper was selected for the eagerly anticipated The Original Trilogy Collection, a collection of figures to commemorate the Original Trilogy of Star Wars films getting released in the DVD format (complete with original unaltered versions no less)....
