A new Y-wing scout bomber goes on its first mission. Assigned to Jedi General Plo Koon's Hunter Squadron, clone trooper pilot Warthog flies the prototype bomber on a mission to bring reinforcements to a Republic outpost. The bomber is armed with proton bombs and laser cannons, and its rotating engines provide increased flight agility.
We love it when Hasbro takes the initiative to throw in a clone from an obscure appearance in The Clone Wars television show (or somewhere else within The Clone Wars multimedia event) and release it in as an action figure at some point. That’s pretty much what they have done with the Clone Trooper Pilot in the Deluxe Y-wing Scout Bomber With Clone Trooper Pilot Deluxe set. Clone Pilot Warthog made an exciting appearance in the Season 2 episode entitled Holocron Heist, but his first appearance was in another facet of the multimedia event of The Clone Wars in the popular graphic novella called Star Wars: The Clone Wars Volume 1: Shipyards Of Doom. (It’s cool when all of the sources can be connected together, isn’t it. And that’s the only source where we see him without a helmet on (to date). The incredible Hasbro offering from their very popular Deluxe line is a set that holds its own and is great on its own merits and not comparing it to the others released thus far. The set includes a new Clone Trooper Pilot and a largely scaled Y-wing Bomber vehicle that offers a great deal of play value rarely seen in this sub-line. And while you may think this is just for the kiddies, Hasbro has really created a very fun “figure with vehicle” combination that should elate fans of all ages. This may be the best value for a product in this sub-line because you absolutely get a lot of plastic for your dollar.
The Y-wing Scout Bomber With Clone Trooper Pilot may just be the best Deluxe set Hasbro has produced. The Y-wing Scout Bomber itself is huge and we’re impressed Hasbro successfully squeezed it into the same box as the rest in this line. It is designed from “a lot” of plastic and if it were a tad larger could have easily fit in the mid-size vehicle assortment. In fact, we think it may even rival the amount of plastic used to create 2010’s TCW Republic Swamp Speeder or 2011’s TCW Separatist Droid Gunship. Obviously both of the latter are larger, but the Y-wing Scout Bomber is absolutely the biggest mini-rig to date. It has two rotating “wings” or “jet propulsions” that store a snap-in bomb each. And then an action feature on the top allows the bomb be dropped. It’s a simple but cool feature. Not many vehicles in the Deluxe line come with all of this “action” so we count ourselves fortunate here. The vehicle also comes with an opening canopy with a nice detailed cockpit and a droid socket which houses an astromech droid you desire to put in it from The Clone Wars line. The ship is very functional and better yet, believable and could easily fit in any episode of The Clone Wars television show. It is definitely a beautifully designed small-scaled vehicle. In fact, we wished we could have seen this vehicle in action in The Clone Wars because it’s that awesome of a vehicle.
Clone Trooper Pilot [Warthog] comes with 12 points of articulation. Largely based on the Clone Trooper Jesse figure from 2011’s TCW BARC Speeder Bike With Clone Trooper Jesse Deluxe set, Warthog comes with a reworked head sculpt of 2008’s TCW Clone Pilot Odd Ball (No. 11) figure. The nice thing about Warthog is his chest box sits perfectly where it needs to be and doesn’t ride up the figure’s chest. The ball-jointed hips are just a bonus for those that love that type of articulation, but it really isn’t needed at all for his to properly pilot the Y-wing Bomber. He comes with a blaster pistol that doesn’t fit that well in either of his hands, but we suppose is essential in some ways for most collectors who don’t want their clones empty handed. The Deluxe Y-wing Scout Bomber With Clone Trooper Pilot is an incredible set. It will be a very popular item and we believe will be a brisk seller at the retail level. There really isn’t much more you would want from a toy in this assortment. This set is a value and you can expect that if Hasbro in general abandons things like speeders in favor of larger-scaled vehicles like the Y-wing Scout Bomber, you can expect the price of the Deluxe line to increase. Where the Deluxe sets with a figure and a BARC speeder or a speeder bike are overpriced, an item like the Y-wing Scout Bomber With Clone Trooper Pilot is a very fair value.
