Why does it always feel like the cart is before the horse when it comes to The Vintage Collection? How long do we have to make excuses for Hasbro that they weren’t prepared for The Mandalorian’s success? When will the main characters cease being exclusives that are impossible to attain for your collection? Star Wars collecting is a shell of what it was a decade ago, and it’s a shame where we are as a collecting community. But if you’re a collector of super-articulated 3.75” action figures, you’re feeling the pain of collecting at intolerable levels. How can a two-pack of the most popular characters from Disney+’s most popular series be relegated to an exclusive? Not only that, the figure so far is only available online, but most collectors’ orders were canceled. Then, out of nowhere, the figure appears in stock, and everyone had to scramble to reorder it. The drama continues to unfold with The Vintage Collection. It’s evident Hasbro has no confidence in the line, and they focus all of their resources on the 6” line. But with a massive vehicle on the horizon, the Razor Crest, Hasbro better start buckling down and producing the many characters from The Mandalorian in The Vintage Collection as soon as possible because collectors are growing tired and are irritated by Hasbro’s lack of focus on the line. It’s terrific to see a “builder pack” version of Din Djarin (The Mandalorian). Inside of the packaging, not only do we get a second character, Grogu, but we also receive one of the rarest items in The Vintage Collection, an interchangeable un-helmeted portrait. It’s inspiring to obtain an alternate head sculpt, and because of it, we have no gripes about the elevated MSRP of $17.99 this exclusive release commands.

It’s nice to finally have The Mandalorian officially named with Din Djarin on the packaging. And we have a fantastic paint job on the beskar armor that keeps it separate from the basic figure release. Much like The Black Series [Phase IV] Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) & The Child (TM05) “beskar” action figure, Hasbro added The Child, Grogu, and a few unique accessories to create a “deluxe” version of the figure for Walmart’s exclusive program. Based on 2020’s TVC The Mandalorian (VC181) figure, it now receives an entirely different paint job with deco that looks closest to the vac-metallization we’ve seen in the line to date. Hasbro can probably sell as many versions of The Mandalorian or Din Djarin as they want to release, and we’ll buy them all. But we have to admit; this release is pretty impressive. Not only do we get a dazzling version of Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) and The Child, we also get exclusive accessories, including a multiple piece camtono (with an articulated opening), as well as a block of beskar in addition to a bar of beskar. We also get the standard accessories like the ray staff and the blaster pistol. Oh, and don’t forget about the jet pack and cape too. Hasbro included ten accessories, including the human head portrait, making this figure a fair value of $17.99. Yes, even we conceded this is well worth the extra dollars. Action figures from The Mandalorian are merchandising gold. This version of The Mandalorian is so much better than the first outfit we received, and we’re looking forward to where the series takes the character. As we’ve hinted, there is something exceptional about paint applications for the shiny armor here. Hasbro did a fine job creating a metallic silver paint.

Although a repaint of The Mandalorian (VC181) figure, The Mandalorian action figure is a retool and repaint of 2020’s TVC The Mandalorian (VC166) action figure. This time, Hasbro gave the base sculpt an all-new torso, all-new upper arms, all-new forearms, an all-new upper left leg, and an all-new lower left leg. The result is a revised version of The Mandalorian as the character appeared after receiving the armor upgrade. The figure has also been completely repainted, and you’ll find that Hasbro utilized a lot of half-toning here to recreate the shimmery effect of the silver armor. Those of us who collect The Vintage Collection action figures strive for them to have unequivocal screen-accuracy. This figure nails it. Hasbro won’t do better. If you have the original version of this figure, you know that The Mandalorian comes with a stunning articulation system. This figure can do it all. Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) comes with an expected, yet impressive, 30 points of articulation. The articulation system, as a whole, has excellent functionality. And because of its fluidity, you can achieve an exceptional wealth of poses. Unfortunately, Hasbro didn’t incorporate “rocker” ankles into this updated release. The set also comes with The Child. The Child isn’t called Grogu on the packaging, so Hasbro prepared the packaging before that announcement. The figure of The Child comes with limited articulation, but there is enough here to be appreciated. You can lift the figure’s arms or turn its head. And surprisingly, it’s noticeably smaller in stature than the 6” version. You’re going to love this exclusive release. But we will go to our grave screaming that this should never have been released an exclusive. This figure set deserves mass distribution.
