The Mandalorian is battle-worn and tight-lipped, a formidable bounty hunter in an increasingly dangerous galaxy who finds a mysterious alien pursued by bounty hunters on behalf of Imperial interests.
Few of us expected to learn the two main characters’ proper names in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, but these details became a reality for the show’s fans. We learned about Din Djarin in the first series finale. And then we learn that Baby Yoda is Grogu in the fifth episode of the second season. No longer The Mandalorian and The Child, we can now refer to them with their proper monikers. Hasbro jumped on these revelations rather quickly and assembled a fantastic exclusive package for TARGET under The Black Series [Phase IV] 6” line. The Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) & The Child two-pack brings collectors everything they need to recreate the many interactions between guardian and ward. And the set also debuts the real name of The Mandalorian, and we look forward to when The Child will be referenced as Grogu in the toy line as well. What makes the Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) & The Child so special is the inclusion of a new head sculpt for Din Djarin (The Mandalorian). For the first time, the figure comes with a removable helmet and few other new accessories that make it unique to previous releases, including a tracking fob and five Beskar plates for The Armorer to melt down. While the first images from Hasbro caused concern that the figure didn’t have a fair likeness to actor Pedro Pascal, we can assure you that Hasbro nailed it on this figure perfectly. Aside from the new head sculpt and unique accessories, this figure is more of the same, but that’s not a bad thing. The Child, however, is all-new here.
For this new version, Hasbro took 2020’s TBS [P4] The Mandalorian (TM01) figure and gave it an all-new “human” portrait of actor Pedro Pascal. They also slightly repainted the figure, but the differences are negligible. The biggest deal here is the removable helmet. And we must commend Hasbro for designing one that isn’t too large for the figure’s head or body and yet maintains the right contour and shape that matches what we see on-screen. The chest armor is entirely geometrical and has a brightness to it that we haven’t seen previously on this character. It’s meant to represent the Beskar metal used to protect it. Also, The Mandalorian comes with a JT-12 jetpack that plugs into the back of the recently retooled torso. The ray staff doesn’t fit as well this time around (the hole on the back is different and intended to work with the jetpack), so don’t think you’re going crazy when you can’t press the plug into the back all that well. With a little patience, it’s possible, but this is a different figure now. The smaller blaster still comes with the figure. And interestingly, we recently learned that it fits best when it looks installed backward, with the butt of the gun facing forward. The cape is still simple to remove from the figure, and you will have to remove it if you decide to use the jetpack instead. Coincidentally, Din Djarin looks like a character from Game of Thrones or other medieval-ish era without wearing the helmet. It’s quite the phenomenon here.
Hasbro worked in a functioning holster for the included blaster pistol. It fits snuggly into place, and the right hand has been designed to accommodate when using it for defense. The figure also comes with a removable cape. The most significant parts of the new Din Djarin 6” figure are the new accessories of a removable helmet, tracking fob, and five Beskar plates. We still love the ray gun, however. Inspired by The Star Wars Holiday Special, the ray gun has a personality of its own and is our preferred weapon for the figure. Din Djarin holds it with one hand or two hands, a staff, or a blaster. The options are yours, and the figure offers the freedom to display it as you wish. Remarkably, Hasbro included an all-new version of Baby Yoda/The Child in this set. And although it comes with significantly less articulation, Hasbro positioned the figure in a way that makes the most sense with its accessories. The figure does have a ball-socket head and two swivel wrists. But there are no articulated shoulders this time. Better yet are The Child’s included accessories, including the pram (which breaks down into pram, removable lid, and invisible display stand). The Child sits a bit awkwardly inside it, but if you’re patient, you can achieve positions that look natural and screen-accurate. The Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) & The Child set feels overpriced, but we can’t help rave over the value included here given by the new accessories. But $35 is far-reaching beyond what collectors’ expectations are for an MSRP.
