Another Star Wars anniversary means another game with an exclusive Retro Collection action figure! It also means "banana visors" are back too! In 2019, Hasbro introduced the Star Wars collecting community to the Retro Collection, a line of figures based on the original Kenner classic 3.75” action figures, placed on packaging inspired from the seventies. Now, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, Hasbro released a new wave of Retro Collection action figures as Walmart exclusives. And now there is a complementary Board Game feature a Kenner-inspired Star Wars figures from the 1980s that was never made available during the original toy line run. Collectors, please welcome the first vintage Kenner Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) figure. It’s the pack-in premium for the Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Game [Exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) Figure] Board Game set. It looks like 1979’s SW Luke Skywalker: X-Wing Pilot, but with new tooling to more closely imitate the snowspeeder pilot uniform Luke Skywalker used during the Battle of Hoth. The figure comes with a blue lightsaber, which was first available with 1983’s ROTJ Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit) before they changed it to green. Also of note, the figure comes with a first-time-ever ascension gun, something we didn’t get back in the day.
Although the Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Game [Exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) Figure] set has an acceptable MSRP, it’s a little bit more than the previous release, the Escape From Death Star Game [Exclusive Grand Moff Tarkin Figure] set. A nod to nostalgia and classic vintage Kenner packaging, Hasbro reintroduces the collecting community to a classic board game that was one of the eighties’ best-selling games. Hasbro tried their best to recreate the box packaging as close to the original, but there is a window this time showing off the Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) pack-in figure. The exclusive Retro Collection Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) figure is a fantastic pack-in bonus, and in all honesty, it is the key selling point of this set. The Retro Collection is vintage Kenner 2.0, and it’s plucking the heartstrings of older collectors. Hasbro is years late in competing with the fan-favorite ReAction line. They focus on pop culture of the 70s and the 80s mostly and create lines of action figures averaging five points of articulation that they didn’t make back in the day. Star Wars doesn’t wholly fit this approach as the vintage Kenner line was the most successful toy line. But Hasbro is now rebirthing it and hoping that it will catch on like the other ReAction lines. The reaction is good thus far. And it appears these vintage-inspired action figures are something interesting older collectors.
The Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Game [Exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) Figure] is a colorful and exciting Board Game. As we’ve stated above, the key selling point here is the exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder) figure, but it’s also excellent to get another chance to purchase this classic board game again. All of the original components appear to be in place here. The graphics are brighter and slightly refreshed, but mostly everything that was in place in the 80s is in place here for 2020. If you’ve never played the board game before, you now have a chance to relive it with your family and remember what made it a fun part of family time. Then again, there are no smart devices included here, so it could flop too. If you think about it, the potential of The Retro Collection line could be significant. In a way, the Retro Collection line is the Hasbro equivalent of the “Infinities” comics series. For those of you that don’t know, the Infinities comics changed a couple of details from the Original Trilogy and then developed a story on how the events changed because of the altered circumstances. New characters never introduced into the Kenner line will now be produced and fill in those gaps and voids where we never had those figures growing up. Hopefully, Hasbro will begin cranking out never-before-made “vintage Kenner” figures like Figrin D’an, a Sandtrooper, and a Rebel Fleet Trooper for the Retro Collection.
