Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker experienced devastating Jedi Starfighter crashes, which necessitated them getting new ones. Logic dictated that they needed to continue their respective journeys in Revenge Of The Sith, so they each receive a “new” one in the second act of the film. In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, both Obi-Wan Kenobi gets a blue and gray Jedi Starfighter for his trip to Utapau. And Anakin Skywalker gets a green and gray Jedi Starfighter for his trip to Mustafar and kill off the remaining Separatists. And now for the Hasbro Revenge Of The Sith line, it’s a Toys R Us exclusive. Hasbro didn’t match the coloring of the on-screen vehicle to the toy all that well. They got the “green” color correct, but they didn’t get the “gray” color right. Instead, they utilized an off-white plastic. Hasbro used the tooling of the original version, 2005’s ROTS Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter (the yellow one), to make this version. So, everything you know about the first one applies here. Instead of packaging the variation into the mainstream Mid-Size Vehicle assortment, they decided to add a pack-in figure, this time Anakin Skywalker, and give it to Toys R Us as their exclusive. As a toy, this new vehicle release looks nice, but it isn’t anything out of the ordinary. However, it comes in exquisite window-box packaging, and it looks gorgeous.
Because Hasbro released both of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s and Anakin Skywalker’s starfighters in the Revenge Of The Sith line, you’d think they would come up with a unique name of naming them. But they didn’t. Both the regular releases and the exclusive releases are called either Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter or Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter. It’s a shame they didn’t identify them by the planets where they utilized them, or perhaps within the battles they fought. The sculpt is based on 2005’s ROTS Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter, like all of the other Jedi Starfighters in the line, but the paint operations are entirely different. Anakin Skywalker didn’t use the vehicle too much before his demise in Episode III, but it is an essential vehicle as it took him to his final destiny/demise. All of the same action features that have been present on every previous starfighter utilizing this mold are present here as well. They’re simple, but they provide enough extra play value to make the vehicle worthwhile. The same projectiles and features, like the opening canopy and opening wings, are once again part of this release. What’s particularly interesting is that the original yellow 2005 Revenge Of The Sith Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter came with a decal sheet, but here Hasbro pre-applied the decals. It’s interesting to note that the decals were applied straightly here. This option of pre-applied decals was an oddity for the Hasbro Star Wars line.
In all honesty, Anakin Skywalker’s Starfighter is not a key or pivotal vehicle in Episode III. Hasbro would have never released this toy, had they not tooled and produced the yellow vehicle Anakin Skywalker flies during the Battle of Coruscant. But once a sculpt is tooled, Hasbro does their best to reuse them to help keep production costs down. Another part of this release also reused to keep costs down, is the inclusion of 2005’s ROTS Anakin Skywalker (III 2) figure. There are no changes to this release compared to the original, save for a few accessory changes. This version of Anakin Skywalker comes with a black-gloved right-hand attachment, and then the black-gloved right hand holding a fully lit lightsaber. Interestingly, Hasbro also decided to include the headset from 2003’s Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker (’03 #42) figure. It doesn’t fit on Anakin Skywalker’s head all that well, but at least the figure has a screen-accurate accessory when flying the vehicle. The included Anakin Skywalker figure is a terrible addition to this exclusive release. The figure can barely sit, and getting it into the cockpit is a significant annoyance. This Toys R Us exclusive has an MSRP of $29.99, well above the cost of the vehicles in the standard assortment. And we’re confident that not too many collectors want another copy of this Anakin Skywalker figure. But that’s us.
