On the planet Tatooine, the Mos Eisley cantina, also known as Chalmun's cantina, is the hot spot for entertainment and intrigue. Many species intermingle there, spying and conducting shady business. Bounty hunters frequent the seedy joint, hoping to catch their prey in an unguarded moment. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker went to the cantina to find transportation off the planet, which led to their first meeting with Han Solo.
It’s more than a mouthful to digest, but it’s difficult for many to understand that we had to wait until the release of 2004’s The Original Trilogy Collection Mos Eisley Cantina (Featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ponda Baba & Zutton) (Scene 2) set to get our first modern version of Blue Snaggletooth figure. But while the gesture is appreciated, we hope that a bigger and better version enters the line for the future, hopefully. With The Original Trilogy Collection line, Hasbro took elements of the vintage Kenner line and applied them into the packaging, characters, and vehicles chosen for the line. Also, the retailer exclusives shared the same benefits. A short while after the Mos Eisley Cantina (Scene 2) released, Hasbro quickly got out another to complement it. And they paid homage to the vintage Kenner line by including a decent version of a Blue Snaggletooth. In this release, Hasbro gave the character the official name of Zutton. As predecessors of the classic modern Kenner Cinema Scenes line, Mos Eisley Cantina (Featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ponda Baba & Zutton) (Scene 2) brought forth classic Star Wars characters that originated in the vintage Kenner line and packaged them together in a collector-focused item. This Kmart exclusive was an instant hit, and the contents within it range from average to good. But the takeaway here is how much “stuff” you get for $19.99. More on that later. These Mos Eisley Cantina sets include an uncut version of the cardboard backdrop showing the distillery and other fixtures present in the cantina. And then Hasbro graciously priced the sets very fairly. Scene 1 features all of the figures from the “canceled” second wave of Walmart exclusives from the Star Wars “Saga - Phase I] line. And then they thought a little outside of the box for Scene 2, our favorite of the two.
At first glance, you’ll notice that the Mos Eisley Cantina (Featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ponda Baba & Zutton) (Scene 2) Kmart exclusive is much more colorful that its Scene 1 companion. The bright orange jacket of Ponda Baba coupled with the blue jumpsuit of Zutton makes this set stand out more than the other. But we’re not sure if all of the contents of Scene 2 are nearly as interesting. Hasbro dusted off 1998’s POT2 [FB/CT] Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi figure. In all honesty, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a great-looking figure. But as far as we determine, he’s screen-inaccurate when compared to the scene we see him in during Episode IV. He wasn’t wearing his hood up, and this is the greatest detractor here. Also (and oddly), Hasbro posed Obi-Wan Kenobi holding the lightsaber with both hands, but like a blaster rifle. His right hand is cupping the blade like a Stormtrooper would grasp the stock of a gun. If you leave things packaged, this may irritate you. But if you’re an opener, this “incorrect pose” is easily fixed. Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t offer too much movement, but you do get enough to pose him in this Scene Packs set. Also, the addition of swivel wrists assists you in achieving nice poses with his lightsaber, which is a plus as far as we’re concerned. Ponda Baba is a repaint of the figure from 2002’s SW [S - P1] Ponda Baba Cantina Bar Section (1 of 3) set. The paint applications notably differ between the two different releases. The figure still comes with the removable arm feature, and the hinge-jointed knees make it easier to pose him seated on the stool on the cantina bar section. He comes with a removable jacket shell, three glasses, and a blaster. But we have to be honest at this stage of the game and express that it would be fantastic if Hasbro tooled an all-new version of Ponda Baba now. This tooling is tired and obsolete now. It’s time for a fresh new take on this beloved cantina alien.
The big surprise in this set is Zutton. Zutton is our first modern version of Blue Snaggletooth from the vintage Kenner line, and the character’s inclusion in this exclusive is extremely appreciated, and we love the homage Hasbro paid to the Kenner toy line by adding it here. Based on 2001’s POTJ Zutton (Snaggletooth) figure, Hasbro took the arms and legs from the Ponda Baba figure (also in this set), repainted him blue, added silver boots and called it a day. This kit-bashed version of Blue Snaggletooth is far from perfection, but he’ll (she’ll?) fill the hole that’s been with the modern line since its inception in 1995. In our opinion, Zutton looks too short when compared against 2001’s POTJ Zutton (Snaggletooth) and the vintage Kenner Blue Snaggletooth. Also, The head sculpt seems off as well. There is great debate of who the vintage Kenner Snaggletooth is supposed to be: Zutton from The Star Wars Holiday Special or Takeel from Chalmiun’s Cantina. Either way, Zutton from this Scene Pack will indeed be the placeholder for the vintage Kenner Blue Snaggletooth until Hasbro gives us a definitive version down the road. But don’t hold your breath. It took a long time to get this release; we imagine that it will take longer for them to revisit it later. What makes this version of Zutton odd is the removable right arm. Again, because the limbs of this figure are from Ponda Baba, they share the same features. For us, the reason to purchase the Mos Eisley Cantina (Featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ponda Baba & Zutton) (Scene 2) set is solely for Zutton. The other figures we can do without, probably. The Mos Eisley Cantina Scene Packs are a fantastic exclusive. We’re glad to see the figures packaged this way. We’ll get better figures in the future, but for now, these will do the job “just fine” for us.
