Hasbro has come extremely far with their 12-Inch Figures line. And the proof of this seems to be manifesting itself strongly with the Episode I line. After a decent couple of waves of Action Collection figures at the product launch of the Episode I toy line, they opened up the 2000 phase of the line with brand-new packaging and a rejuvenated commitment to screen accuracy and excellent action figure tooling. Their Action Collection figures never looked better. Sebulba (With Chubas), in particular, is one of Hasbro’s greatest efforts to date. Yes, aliens in any scale look remarkably better than any human character, but Sebulba (With Chubas) should not be taken for granted. A CGI character in The Phantom Menace, Hasbro did an incredible job breathing three-dimensional life into this action figure. From the scale to the design to the final paint operations, Sebulba (With Chubas) will undoubtedly stand out from most past Action Collection releases and remain that way for years to come. He is that good.
Sebulba (With Chubas) is an all-new sculpt and borrows no previous tooling from any past released Action Collection figure. Sebulba is a Dug, and although the species have a quasi-humanoid shape, all-new tooling was required to bring this character to life as an action figure in any form. The figure doesn’t come with a ton of articulation. A reverse ball-socket neck is joined by two swivel shoulders, two swivel elbows, and two swivel hips. But other than that, Sebulba (With Chubas) has no other points of articulation. This isn’t a problem, however. He appears to have all the articulation he needs. It’s his lack of accessories that we find problematic. Sebulba (With Chubas) comes with three chubas. They’re formed from a pliable and rubbery plastic and decorated beautifully. They have speckles and detail to form their eyes and mouths. The fit in between Sebulba’s fingers and toes and thanks to their pliability, they bend and move as needed to help complete your display with authenticity.
Overall, Sebulba (With Chubas) has beautiful paint operations. Cast in a light purple plastic, Hasbro added darker and lighter colors to accent the base color. And the final results are nothing short of impressive. We’re especially taken by the head sculpt of Sebulba (With Chubas). It’s quite astounding what Hasbro accomplished translating the character into an Action Collection figure. It’s for this reason alone that we feel you should give this Action Collection figure a chance. But we’d also like to let you know why we’re slightly disappointed with this release as well. Sebulba (With Chubas) doesn’t come with enough accessories. Where are his podracing goggles? Were are his tools to repair his podracer? Where is an interchangeable podracing suit? It feels like Hasbro could have done more to give this figure more value. But all we get are three chubas. Regardless, if you can overlook the shortfall of accessories here, Sebulba (With Chubas) is still one of the greatest Action Collection figures Hasbro has ever produced.
