Celebrate the legendary Star Wars films that changed the universe forever, with The Saga Collection. This collection brings to life the incredible story of good versus evil that captured our imagination and took us to a galaxy far, far away. The finest re-creations of the iconic Star Wars heroes and villains are back with incredible detail and premium features to commemorate each epic tale in the Star Wars saga. And, as a tribute to the dedication of Star Wars fans everywhere, we are re-releasing elements of the original packaging that harken back to the creation of Star Wars action figures, which began over 25 years ago with the Original Trilogy. May the Force be with you!

As exciting as the second wave of vintage figures from The Saga Collection were, collectors became a little disgruntled with the Princess Leia Organa (In Combat Poncho) figure. To this day, this completely perplexes us. Of course the figure isn’t free from issues, but we don’t these said issues are as bad as what many have expressed. Yes, Princess Leia Organa has a very long neck for her character (but it doesn’t look as exaggerated as what we’ve heard by the noise makers – well, maybe at a profile, but certainly not face to face) and her poncho is a tad too dark and bulky. But these small issues shouldn’t really detract from how awesome this action figure is. Doubling as both her appearance as a “Rebel General” and “In Combat Poncho” (from the speeder bike chase sequence), this version of Princess Leia had an incredible amount of versatility and should have an important place in your collection. Princess Leia Organa (In Combat Poncho) was part of the 2007 Ultimate Galactic Hunt promotion where if you collected six gold foil stickers from inside the packages of the vintage figures, you could mail away for seven exclusive coins only available through this promotion. But the sole purpose of getting six beautiful action figures was really the only impetus for buying them. And interestingly, the concentration for this set of vintage figures was The Empire Strikes Back, so Princess Leia (In Combat Poncho) seemed a little out of place since she was sourced from Return Of The Jedi.

Princess Leia Organa (In Combate Poncho) is perfectly in scale with the rest of the line. While the 1984 vintage figure was a bit too tall, the more modern The Power Of The Force and Power Of The Jedi figures dwarfed it terribly. This modern vintage figure has been given an all-new sculpt complete with revised scale and she is the shortest of the bunch (as she should be). You can quickly remove her poncho and then replace her belt and the figure looks great as a “Rebel General”. But since the belt is used to keep together her extra large poncho, it sits well below the waist and at the top of the hips which may certainly annoy some hardcore collectors. But we think it look fine and if it bothers you it too can be quickly removed. The coloring on the figure is near perfection in every way. She has a peach-colored blouse underneath a very light green shirt vest and light gray/blue pants with a yellow blood stripe. The outfit is finished off with the correctly colored black boots. Samples vary from one to the other, but her portrait is very nicely detailed and the resemblance is very good. What may make some think the likeness is more off than others is the way the whites of the eyes have been painted. (Sometimes the white of the eyes are too thick and bleed too far out from the pupil.) Trust us, we have studied this very carefully and it will require some discrimination on your part to find one with perfectly painted eyes.

Princess Leia Organa (In Combat Poncho) comes with a removable helmet, blaster pistol (also known under the very clumsy name of Drearian defense conglomerate defender), combat poncho, and removable ammunition belt with functioning holster. It comes with the same exact accessories as the vintage figure! How cool is that? She is also super-articulated which makes this even a better deal. Her center of gravity is right on part and she can be posed in a multitude of positions which also sweetens the deal for us. This is definitely the definitive version of Leia in this costume. We wouldn’t ask for this figure again because while it’s not perfect, it does meet our requirements in so many ways of what defines a definitive figure. Your opinions may certainly vary, but it is our stance that this is one figure not to pass on for your collections. Unfortunately, she was the peg warmer of the six figures in this wave. Obviously there are opinions out there that differ from ours. But we love this figure tremendously and she looks fantastic next to the 2006 TSC Luke Skywalker (SAGA 044) figure (who also sports his battle poncho). (Editor’s Note: There has since been an update to the SAGA 044 figure and it can be found in the 2009 LC Battle For Endor Battle Packs.) We are just hoping for a good modern update to the rest of the original 1983-1984 Ewoks because they are just as important to us and Luke and Leia. But while we wait for Hasbro to attack them, Princess Leia Organa (In Combat Poncho) is certainly a figure that should bring you satisfaction. At worst, there is no denying that this figure looks great on the vintage-styled card back. At least pick her up for that reason alone!
