General Analysis

JEDI KNIGHT and member of ENDOR assault group. On a SPEEDER BIKE, he fearlessly pursued IMPERIAL BIKER SCOUTS.

1985 was a very, very special year for me. I was preparing to enter the last grade in my township's elementary school, so people in my class were the big men and women on campus. A Christian heavy metal group called STRYPER broke into the mainstream, and my parents wouldn’t allow me to listen to their music. Christian singer AMY GRANT released her breakthrough UNGUARDED album, and she broke into Billboards Hot 100 charts with her hit single FIND A WAY. And while my childhood friends were walking away from STAR WARS collecting, I was more engaged than ever. Little did I know that the time was running out for me to enjoy this delightful hobby. I was always desperate to add new figures to my collection, I begged my mom on my 11th birthday (July 31, 1985) to take me to TOYS R US in East Brunswick, NJ, so I could see what new goodies I could add next. She obliged to take me to the store, but she also advised me to spend my birthday money wisely. I could tell she wasn’t too eager to see me expend the little money I received for my birthday on more STAR WARS “men.” Of course, as soon as we entered the store, I ran to the STAR WARS aisle, and my mouth nearly hit the floor. I saw STAR WARS figures, but not like I had ever seen before that day. There were over a dozen new figures. There were repeat figures in the new packaging. And they all came with coins. My mom sighed, but once she saw the excitement on my face, she helped me pull all the “new” figures from the pegs so we could make that dreaded trip to the register. The vintage Kenner STAR WARS line changed, and it was the most beautiful thing I can recall seeing at that tender age. Luke Skywalker (In Combat Poncho) was one of the new figures hanging from the pegs, and I remember being extremely excited because I thought it wasn’t fair that we had Han Solo (In Trench Coat) and Princess Leia Organa (In Combat Poncho) but no Luke Skywalker in a similar outfit yet. Now I did. It’s one of my most favorite figures from the 1985 THE POWER OF THE FORCE line. And he still holds a special place in my heart today. Thank you, Mom, for letting me get those 13 THE POWER OF THE FORCE figures on that extraordinary birthday of mine!
