Celebrate the legacy of Star Wars, the action-and-adventure-packed space saga from a galaxy far, far away, with this collection of premium, highly-detailed 3.75-inch scale figures and vehicles. (Each sold separately. Subject to availability.)

It would be dishonest to say that Hasbro’s Walmart exclusive line of The Black Series [Phase III] 3.75” super-articulated figures were a collector’s dream. While the sculpts were stunning, the deco they received sent them to the back of the line and collectors were as frustrated as they were happy to have some of the characters from the new Star Wars Entertainment in super-articulated status. Captain Cassian Andor is a figure that received a stunning sculpt and a paint job that took away some of that credit. Now a virtually unchanged version enters The Vintage Collection, much to the dissatisfaction of Star Wars collectors everywhere. At least collectors will have a more fair chance at securing him this time, and the packaging may make it worthwhile for carded collectors looking to complete The Vintage Collection’s sequential numbering. Paint operations have been the nagging issue with the Walmart exclusive 3.75” line. We don’t want to see them return for The Vintage Collection. And once we get over the 2018 hurdle, “photorealistic” technology will be infiltrating the 3.75” super-articulated line. We’re happy about that because The Vintage Collection needs a break. As we’ve mentioned, the figures themselves have excellent sculpts (including the portraits), but the final paint operations render these fantastic sculpts terrible because it looks like an incompetent artist has painted them instead.

This is the plight of Captain Cassian Andor, a figure that should be nearly flawless thanks to its execution, but whose deco leaves a whole lot to be desired. What’s so frustrating is that the paint job on the figure from the neck down is gorgeous. So what is the deal with Hasbro that they’re unable to give head sculpts the same treatment? Hasbro explains their processes are responsible for the shoddily applied face deco on their figures. Thankfully they’re doing something about it now. Despite the figure’s deco flaws, Captain Cassian Andor has an excellent face sculpt. We can tell just from its proportions and shape. But the deco, while not terrible, is far from what it should be and certainly not worthy of The Vintage Collection quality. The eyes look a tad better this time around, but the hairline and beard are sloppily applied. It looks like Captain Cassian Andor was decorated with a Sharpie pen and a steady hand instead of somewhere on the assembly line belt. It’s disappointing, and it’s unacceptable. And it’s aggravating. It’s all these things because The Vintage Collection presentation of this figure should have been the final word. And now it needs a redo so to speak. Thankfully, Captain Cassian Andor comes with a great accessory that takes some of the pain away from the figure’s deco issues. Why must the few super-articulated figures from Rogue One suffer these plights?

Captain Cassian Andor comes with a removable jacket shell and a three-part blaster rifle. The shell is a “required” accessory because he’ll look incomplete without it. But we like the layering aspect this separately sculpted accessory creates for the action figure. You probably will overall look the jacket shell in favor of the weapon anyhow. If you recall the 2016 TBS6 [P3] Imperial Death Trooper/Captain Cassian Andor/Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha) TARGET exclusive three-pack, then you know what you’re going to receive with the 3.75” version. Hasbro gave Captain Cassian Andor the same three-part functional blaster rifle like the one in the 6” set. The blaster rifle breaks down into three separate pieces and the middle section doubles as a blaster pistol which is housed in his holster when not in use. It’s a fantastic accomplishment in 3.75” super-articulated scale and not only did Hasbro tool an exceptional accessory for this figure, but they also gave it a beautiful paint job as well. This weapon style is very cool and new to the Star Wars universe. It also makes up for where the figure lacks too. Captain Cassian Andor is a nice action figure. But like so many other action figures before him, we wished his head looked better. It will be worth it apparently as we move closer to 2019. The “photorealistic” technology is the last hope we have to make 3.75” action figures look better than ever before, and we’re hopeful Hasbro will do it right.
