Chewbacca

General Analysis

He wasn’t my first Star Wars action figure, but he was one of the first dozen that I collected. I do recall that clearly. I remember when my parents bought two Chewbacca action figures: one for my brother and one for me. He was too important of a character for sharing. Interestingly, I could always tell which one was mine (without any initials incised on the bottom of his foot). Even at the tender age of six, my obsessive-compulsiveness forced me to pay attention to minute differences between the two Chewbacca figures the Paul Harrison household owned. (Mine had evenly applied crystal sharp blue eyes with perfectly centered white dots for pupils while my brother’s sample had more sloppily applied deco instead.) We both adored Chewbacca as a character. We owned dogs growing up and loved them and the joy they brought. Thus, we understood why George Lucas created and based a major Star Wars character after his family pet. As time moved forward, I believe we both lost our respective bowcasters (we called them crossbows as kids). And that was a problematic accessory to replace in later years. It ended up becoming much more accessible to buy another loose figure that was complete. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered on the card back art of the original Star Wars Chewbacca figure that Kenner edited the still dramatically. If you look carefully, you’ll notice that the left side (your right side) of the bowcaster is edited out of the image. (Kenner hid the other half of the bowcaster's front piece behind the figure’s placement.) After a discussion with Chuck, we concluded that this action was perhaps done to more closely mirror the weapon accessory, despite its screen inaccuracy. Is it possible that Kenner manipulated the image to cover up their mistake? Shady! But Interesting, huh?
