Rey (Jedi Training): At long last, Rey has found Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi Master in the galaxy. Hoping to find a hero of legend, she must unlearn what she has learned as Skywalker challenges her expectations.

Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master): After tragedy destroyed his attempt to rebuild the Jedi Knights, Luke Skywalker vanished from the galaxy. Now, the Resistance needs his help to thwart the efforts of the evil First Order.

So are we really sure that Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi isn’t a remake of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back because the brief bios on these characters seem like they're a direct rip from the 1980 script. We’ll take them at their word for now. Moving along. The biggest surprise announcement for 2017’s San Diego Comic Con was undoubtedly the Rey (Jedi Training)/Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master), a two-pack set up in deluxe The Black Series [Phase III] packaging and an elevated MSRP. The announcement of these two figures got out earlier than planned. The images appeared on Hasbro.com’s website where they were unceremoniously taken down once news began to spread. Then once the figures were finally announced at the SDCC convention, this two-pack, along with all other Hasbro exclusives, appeared on Hasbro Toy Shop’s website, where once again, the Star Wars items were removed. Hasbro then sent out a brief press release that the original August 14, 2017 public availability date was being bumped to September. Time will tell if these dang figures will ever see normal or easy availability. Collectors aren’t too hopeful. That being said, the Rey (Jedi Training)/Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master) is much better in theory than it is in delivery. Is it great to get two new figures based on The Last Jedi in July? Sure, but like so many other human The Black Series 6” figure, both Rey (Jedi Training) as well as Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master) have so many wonderful components but the deco on their faces leaves a great deal to be desired.

Rey (Jedi Training) is the better figure of the two, and that honestly pains us to admit that. We had such high hopes for Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master) but we know you’re going to be left feeling cold just as we were. We’ll get to him in a moment. Rey (Jedi Training) (wait, she needs training now?) has been sculpted and painted very well. We should note that her facial paint operations look worse in our pictures than they do in person. Our high definition photography focus on all of the imperfections at an enlarged level. Your eyes won’t make out all of this detail and we imagine you’ll believe your sample looks fine. (It will.) She isn’t a perfect figure, but she does looks better than average (in the face) thanks to a better shaped head and a computer generated paint application. The rest of the figure is near perfect. Her revised Episode VIII outfit looks wonderful with a lot more gray color this time around. Hasbro has tooled a believable and beautiful costume for her. Fans of this character are going to fall in love all over again. Coming with the same articulation system as almost every other 6” figure before her, Rey (Jedi Training) is mobile in pretty much every way you want her to be. She also comes wonderfully accessorized. She comes with the same staff and blaster she had in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. And this time she comes with Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber that breaks down into hilt and blade. (We hope Disney doesn’t know Hasbro included Luke’s lightsaber with Rey. It’s going to cause MAJOR problems.)

We hate to let you down, but Luke Skywalker is a major disappointment. He looks like a cross between Charlton Heston playing Moses in The Ten Commandments and Gandalf the Grey from Lord of the Rings. We’re really not going out of our way to be sarcastic or unfair here. Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master) just looks off in more than a single way. We suppose his likeness is above average because the sculpting is there, but something went awry in the finishing stages. Something is off and we can’t really pinpoint what is bothering us so much. Everything below his head looks great, but it isn't too functional. We truly appreciate the soft-goods outer robe. It has been woven in a luxurious fabric and appears to be made of a high quality material. But Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master) will have the same posing inabilities because of his molded lower roves and general encumbered range of movement thanks to bulky clothing (tooled in plastic). Think “Obi-Wan Kenobi” from The Black Series [Phase III] line. You’re going to have the same issues with Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master). The 6” line should make movement fluid and seamless. Hasbro should be thinking of ways to design these figure so that their great articulation is rendered useless. But that’s what’s happening here with Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master). Perhaps we’re exhausted from the unacceptable two year wait to finally have Luke, but we truly expected better. Add to that an elevated MSRP of $49.99 for premium packaging, we think the negatives are approaching to outweigh the positives.
