It took a little extra time, but Kenner was finally able to get out the third and final set in the Max Rebo Band Pairs line out to Walmart stores across the USA. The Max Rebo/Doda Bodonawieedo was quite a pain to track down initially. Many blamed the over shipment of the first wave which contained the first two sets alone. This is proof enough that when a full collection of something is to be released that it should all be released together. Despite some initial distribution issues, the two-pack finally made its way out and made collectors quite happy. Perhaps the brightest colored set of all, the sky blue Max Rebo is joined by Rodian Doda Bodonawieedo (yeah, say that three times fast) in a set that joins both the original unaltered version of Return Of The Jedi with the Special Edition version making a seamless set of Jabba’s palace musicians. This was the approach for all three sets, but most collectors couldn’t wait to grab this set as it has the band leader with his signature red ball organ. You get a great deal of plastic here for $11.99. In our opinion, Max Rebo alone (well, with his red ball organ of course) should have cost that. But we get a whole other first time offered Star Wars figure here as well. Sure Doda Bodonawieedo isn’t perfect by any means, but how many uniquely looking Rodians do you know of that can help pad our Star Wars collections. As a result, this set is pretty darn cool.

Doda Bodonawieedo is not that wonderful of a figure. For those action figures holding woodwinds in this line, Kenner didn’t tool them properly and it’s very hard to get them into poses where it looks like they’re really playing them. We also aren’t crazy about the size and shape of his head. Now, if you look at stills from this film, it appears Kenner wasn’t that far off. Doda Bodonawieedo’s head size is definitely smaller than Greedo’s was, but when that size difference got translated into the action figure, well, let’s just say that it just doesn’t look right. The rest of the figure’s stature looks pretty good. This Rodian is tall and slender just how the action figure is. And the coloring looks about as perfect as can be expected. He comes with a slitherhorn instrument accessory. It has been beautifully tooled and nicely painted. Doda Bodonawieedo can definitely hold the instrument well, but when you attempt to place the instrument at his mouth, well, let’s just say that it doesn’t want to stay in that position very long at all. Doda Bodonawieedo doesn’t come with great articulation. In fact, he just comes with the standard amount that we see on basically any The Power Of The Force “2” figure, which isn’t saying that much at all. For diorama or display purposes Doda Bodonawieedo is pretty much middle of the road. You don’t need him to do a whole lot in a display setting, so perhaps this is all we truly need form this figure. We just wish we had more versatility in the arm articulation.

The star of this set of course is Max Rebo. And he is a real modern treat to those hardcore vintage collectors who have the original 1984 Return Of The Jedi version. He is brighter blue this time around, but the sculpt is divine and really captures the mystical character from the film. We would have loved to see Kenner give Max Rebo some “dirtiness” like they did with Droopy McCool in this exclusive range, but he doesn’t have speck of grime on him. Just like the vintage Kenner figure, modern Kenner had to estimate what this character looks like below the waist. And great debate exists on the accuracy of it. But following old trends is fine with us and the figure looks pretty cool inside and outside of his red ball organ. Oh, and that organ. Well, if you own the original 1984 Kenner version, you pretty much know what to expect here. The modern version is very similar, but is a completely new sculpt with more color and detail of course. And the organ keys are “articulated” which really just means you can press them down and then they’ll come right back up. We’re so happy that Kenner has updated this whole cast of characters and accessories to fit better in the modern Kenner lineup. This set in particular really has us smiling. The Max Rebo Band Pairs collection are really well done. We don’t believe they’re completely perfect of course, and we still need a puppet version of Sy Snootles. But Kenner did an admirable job with the modern updates, and for that we’re pretty stoked about them.
