Ten years after the fight to save Naboo from invasion, the galaxy is on the brink of civil war. Under the leadership of a renegade Jedi, thousands of solar systems threaten to secede from the Galactic Republic. A courageous Jedi Knight, his impulsive and headstrong apprentice, and a queen-turned-senator are drawn into the heart of the conflict... and the beginning of war.

Currently presiding over the Galactic Republic, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine maintains that negotiations are continuing with the Separatists. Peace is the objective, he assures the Senate, not war. However, Palpatine subsequently takes a more aggressive approach when the Senate grants him absolute power to commission an emergency army to end the civil strife.

What Star Wars toy line would be complete without an interpretation of Palpatine? He plays things very close to the vest in Episode I and Episode II and sets up what will be a disastrous consequence for the Jedi who are dedicating their lives to protect the freedom of the Republic. An entry into the action figure line of this category seems almost obligatory, and while he may not present kids with optimal play value, he does resonate with collectors who are looking for great sculpts that an stand unassisted and look great in your collection. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine scores high marks all around these points. Whether you enjoy the Prequel Trilogy or not and whether you prefer super-articulation or not, you can’t deny that the likeness of this action figure is spot on to the character in Episode II. Aside from some heavy application of accentuated liver spots, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine looks fantastic from head to toe. If you can’t see this, then perhaps you’re a burned out collector.

The impressive likeness is no his only strong point either. With limited articulation, Hasbro has designed an even more impressive costume. Every last detail has been captured effortlessly. The coloring, the details and even the drape of his robes look amazing. And they’ve all been finished off with a spectacular paint job that ties the excellent sculpt together. Things that you may take for granted have been executed excellently here. For example, the manner in which his robes hang in a pleated style is nothing short of incredible. And let’s not forget the details etched into those pleats. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine looks like he jumped right out of the screen. If you’re a super-articulation junky, obviously this action figure isn’t for you. Coming with only seven points of swivel articulation, you’re not going to get much functionality from him. But keep in mind this is a display piece. He is what he is. Just Palpatine: No weapons or accessories or anything else for that matter.

Perhaps the greatest feature on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is his hands (and the subsequent movement Hasbro has added to his arms to make them as useful as possible). His fingers are outstretched on both hands, which allow you to interlace the fingers and recreate a folded hands position which literally looks brilliant. But thanks to the additional swivel articulation added in the shoulders and elbows, you can situate his hands in other positions, like making a point, beckoning a servant, or even speaking to the senate. Undoubtedly, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is a far cry from super-articulation. But do you really need more than the seven points they included here? He can do everything but sit, but since his costume would require all soft-goods to make this possible, the aesthetics may have become compromised had they gone in that direction. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was heavily shipped and could be found at closeouts for as low as $1.99. If you can till find one at that price, he is a steal.
