The Saga Collection brought a wonderful amount of excellent action figures to collectors. One figure released in the premium-packaged “vintage” The Saga Collection (simply known as VTSC to collectors) has held up remarkably well today despite a few updates to it over the years and is more commonly known as Han Solo (In Trench Coat). Hasbro did a fine job on this fan favorite version of Han Solo in Endor gear and it has been a mainstay in most peoples’ collections. In a slightly surprising move, Hasbro decided to put a “newer” interpretation of this figure into The Vintage Collection and to be quite honest we’re not so sure if we understand why they took the route they did. (For the record, we don’t think it was a bad decision, we’re just not sure why they did that.) Instead of just tweaking or repacking 2006’s VTSC Han Solo (In Trench Coat), they took the Han Solo figure from 2009’s TLC Shield Generator Assault Battle Packs set and then cut the trench coat from the 2006 figure from a new fabric and fitted this Han Solo figure with it. The final results are impressive, but the two different vintage-styled interpretations of Han Solo that we have now look very different from each other.
Some of you may be interested to know that this Han Solo (In Trench Coat) figure made an appearance twice before being released as a single basic carded figure. It was first available as part of the very controversial 2011 TVC Revenge Of The Jedi [Death Star II] SDCC exclusive set. And right after the figure was included in 2011’s SW [SOTDS] Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi (Blu-ray Release Commemorative Figure & Mini-Poster Collection) multipack. The material used for the trench coat this time around has a brush looked instead of a streamlined look and the camouflage pattern in completely different. In fact, due to the difference in the way the camouflage pattern has been applied, the 2006 trench coat and the 2011 version really look worlds apart from each other. Han Solo (In Trench Coat) does look fantastic nonetheless and maybe it was time to refresh the figure a bit more. The head sculpt is not overtly a portrait that rings true with collectors, but most have found it an acceptable likeness to our favorite Rebel hero. In addition to the trench coat, Han Solo also comes with a blaster pistol that can be fitted into the working holster. What more would you want?
Han Solo (In Trench Coat) is a key vintage Star Wars action figure. It dates back to 1984 and has remained a favorite action figure with Star Wars fans for years. And probably very few of us believed that Hasbro would ever revisit this figure again. And it’s not entirely accurate to refer to this figure as a revisit. The approach has been rethought, but the figure is essentially the same as those previously released. It’s just a different combination. But the important thing to note is that it’s a winning combination. Hasbro needs to keep pumping out the original 92+ vintage Kenner figures into The Vintage Collection. One of the most important things for collectors is to get modern replacements for all of the figures they grew up with and played with during their childhood years. Han Solo (In Trench Coat) is a step in the right direction. But there are so many other characters that have yet to be attempted in vintage packaging that need their day in the sun too. The Vintage Collection will not run forever, so its important for Hasbro to act now and get as many as they can knocked out. While we patiently wait, we will absolutely enjoy figures like Han Solo (In Trench Coat).
