RETURN OF THE JEDI was a powerful conclusion to this epic saga of good versus evil. The whole world knows this film by its current title, which evokes the glorious return of the hero. But during filming, the movie was slated to be called REVENGE OF THE JEDI. Merchandise was developed based on this title, including Kenner action figure packaging. Then, late in production, there was a dramatic change. Shortly before the film was released, George Lucas decided the title should be RETURN OF THE JEDI. The final title carries a more appropriate emotional tone because, of course, a Jedi would not seek revenge.

Back in February 2011, Hasbro proudly displayed what was going to be the 2011 San Diego Comic Con exclusive. It was a multipack of 14 basic carded figures from The Vintage Collection but presented to collectors with a twist. The legendary original title of Return Of The Jedi was Revenge Of The Jedi until George Lucas determined that Jedi do not seek revenge. But in order to prepare for the film’s arrival and have product ready, Kenner started producing card backs with the “old” Revenge Of The Jedi title on them. Some product managed to leak out with this outdated logo and many of the original card backs are the highlights of many collections. But Hasbro thought it would be powerfully reminiscent to introduce The Vintage Collection figures under the Revenge Of The Jedi logo and that’s exactly what they did. Housed in a huge Death Star II package, collectors will find 6 regularly sized on each side (this huge packaging is gatefold for heaven’s sake) with a miniature carded figure in the center. Unbeknownst to collectors at the time, Salacious Crumb and Mouse Droid (the two carded miniature figures) actually have their own collection numbers. This is an unprecedented and unexpected move by Hasbro. Exclusive figures so far in the line have been designated as VCP, so right now it’s unclear what exactly is going on. The sad thing is carded collectors will undoubtedly have two gaping holes in their collections unless Hasbro makes these again available to us. (Right now they boast “not for individual sale” which borders on maddening!) The frustration doesn’t stop there. More on this in a moment.

On the positive side, Hasbro has stated that the other 12 included figures will be available at retail to everyone as chase figures. But one question (also currently unanswered) remains and that is will the running change Rebel Commando of African descent be released at the retail level? Hopefully this will be answered shortly. It’s technically the only new figure offered in this set besides the two miniature figures. The rest of the figures are straight repacks. Darth Vader (VC08), Admiral Ackbar (VC22), Luke Skywalker (Endor Capture) (VC23), R2-D2 (VC25), Wicket (VC27), and the Stormtrooper (VC41) are straight repacks of their original releases save for the Revenge Of The Jedi card back. Boba Fett is new in the fact that Hasbro re-carded the 2004 VOTC Boba Fett figure. Han Solo (In Trench Coat) (VC62) is sort of new because instead of just repackaging the 2006 VTSC Han Solo (In Trench Coat) figure, Hasbro has opted to take the 2008 TLC Shield Generator Assault Han Solo figure and put a new trench coat on him instead. It’s definitely the better figure and we applaud them for changing this up a bit for collectors. Keyan Farlander (B-wing Pilot) (VC63) gets his first opportunity as a basic carded figure, but he is just a straight repack of the figure that came in 2008’s TLC Rebel Pilot Legacy (Series II) Evolutions set. Princess Leia (Slave Outfit) (VC64) is almost a straight repack of 2009’s LC Princess Leia (BD17) except for one very important accessory. Princess Leia comes without her interchangeable “sitting” legs. It’s a shame, but we don’t think it would have fit well inside the packaging. Lastly, TIE Fighter Pilot (VC65) is a repack of the figure from 2009’s LC TIE Interceptor Toys R Us exclusive. Just keep in mind that while these figures haven’t been available yet at retail when this set was released that they will be general releases later in 2011.

While most of this set includes rehashed figures, the stuff that is “new” is causing quite a stir within the collector community. What’s worse however is the difficulty in obtaining this set. At Comic Con, collectors had to get a ticket to purchase the set which angered many. And then Hasbro wasn’t remotely prepared for the influx of collectors desperately trying to secure one at HasbroToyShop.com. The latter was a train wreck in every sense of the word and only a few lucky collectors were able to finalize their order at checkout. The anger felt by fans caused them to write into hasbro expressing their chagrin with how the whole process was handled. And while it was a very emotional event, it remains to be seen if Hasbro will produce more sets to meet collector demand. (Hasbro representatives have already stated that no more will be made available.) The Revenge Of The Jedi [Death Star II] 2011 San Diego Comic Con exclusive is absolutely one of the biggest and neatest exclusives Hasbro has ever made for collectors. Perhaps they thought that the sheer size and price of the item would have deterred some fans from adding it into their collections. It actually had the opposite effect. This set is big and beautiful and it pays homage to the vintage Kenner line in very powerful ways. Even if Hasbro is unable to produce more sets, they owe it to many collectors who get one of everything to rerelease the Salacious Crumb, Mouse Droid and Rebel Commando variant. (At least the black Rebel Commando is getting mainstream). There still exists many problems with The Vintage Collection in general. Wedge Antilles (VC28) and the Gamorrean Guard (VC21) have not met demand. Boring army builders are inundating the pegs. And distribution is spotty at best. Hopefully this calamity will show Hasbro that fans are totally into The Vintage Collection and that they really need to focus on it to make it the best it can be.
