Character Profile

The first appearance of Boba Fett was in an animation short in the Star Wars Holiday Special, whose first and only televised airing was on November 17, 1978. In the cartoon, Fett's clothing and armor are brighter, more colorful, and much less battle-worn than how they will appear in The Empire Strikes Back. While he still wears his jet backpack, he carries a twin-pronged weapon instead of his now-trademark blaster.

Friend or foe? Boba Fett helps Chewie find a cure for the sleeping sickness that has infected Han and Luke, but he also tells Darth Vader of the Rebels’ location. The droids intercept his message and tell the Rebels, but Fett escapes, promising that they will meet again.

If there was any saving grace in 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special, it was the animated short which showcased everyone’s first look at the most notorious bounty hunter in the entire galaxy, Boba Fett. Actually, the cartoon was very engaging and whilst the plot wasn’t perfect, the animation, voiceovers and introduction of new characters and creatures was more than worth it for many fans. In fact, to this day people still want to see other characters from various vintage animated shorts made into action figures. (If only the dialogue and interaction between the live actors in the Star Wars Holiday Special could have been half as good….but oh well.) Boba Fett’s main role in the Star Wars Holiday Special was to help Chewbacca find a cure for the sleeping sickness affecting Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Unbeknownst to Chewie, Boba Fett is actually communicating with Darth Vader to inform him of the Rebels’ current location. C-3PO and R2-D2 save the day and intercept the communication between Vader and Fett, but Fett escapes with a cliffhanger promising that they will soon meet again. How true that was! The special was shown only once on November 17, 1978 will likely never be available on DVD or Blu-ray since the rest of it is nearly intolerable to watch (not that we agree entirely).

But the reason to get excited about the Star War Holiday Special is that Hasbro (who NEVER delves into 1978’s biggest debacle) decided to release our favorite bounty hunter in the 30 (77-07) as he appeared in it. And this should be a reason for everyone to get very excited. The Animated Debut: Boba Fett action figure isn’t a new figure in the sense that Hasbro revamped the 2004 VOTC Boba Fett, but they have made it stand on its own legs by making a realistic-styled version of the animated character. The action figure is done extremely well and between the beautiful paint job and the inclusion of some accessories specific to the animated short, this should be something fans should relish for years to come. For this release, Hasbro has included a new belt as well as new forearms. These differences alone breathe new life into this 2004 sculpt. But even more impressive than the sculpting enhancements is the marvelous paint job. Painted to match the cartoon version of Boba Fett, Hasbro has given him a metallic silver/blue color in the helmet, boots and forearms and the chest plate and knee armor are colored in a medium yellow. The blue and yellow combined looks fantastic and it easily becomes one of our most favorite incarnations of Boba Fett ever! He have brown and tan Wookiee scalps and his newly colored cape matches them as it is dyed in brown as well.

The backpack is also nicely painted and matches the rest of his outfit flawlessly. All of the colors found on Boba Fett’s person can be found somewhere on the jetpack. When comparing the Animated Debut: Boba Fett to 2004’s VOTC Boba Fett, you’ll notice that while their body types are quite similar, they really do looks like two unique action figures. We hope that a figure like this opens up the doors for other animated figures in the modern Hasbro line. Hasbro has forever remained reluctant to attempt many figures in any animated series and this is a shame. We know that collectors would love to see modern updates to Vlix, Sise Fromm and Tig Fromm as well as many other characters from Droids and even the Ewoks series. But Hasbro’s interest in heading in this direction remains to be seen. Animated Debut: Boba Fett however is at an advantage because, well, it’s Boba Fett and we will venture to guess than ANY version of Boba Fett will exceed Hasbro’s projections. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a profit to be gained with lesser known characters. Let’s hope that the Animated Debut: Boba Fett serves as a catalyst for other animated characters to see the light of day as an action figure. Hasbro excels well at these types of figures, so others should definitely be made.
