Putting behind a checkered past by lending her skills to a greater cause, Jyn Erso is impetuous, defiant, and eager to bring the battle to the Empire. Used to operating alone, she finds higher purpose by taking on a desperate mission for the Rebel Alliance.

Not all collectors are on board, but Hasbro is taking the time to re-release an entire collection of 6-inch action figures from a single Star Wars source. The goal is to release them through the Fan Channel with Photo Real deco updates and new packaging. To help complement this series of action figures, Hasbro also included a brand new formation of a character they negligently omitted previously. We’re, of course, talking about the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lineup. And the new addition to the line is Bodhi Rook. And the updated figure is Jyn Erso. Hasbro dropped the “Sergeant” before the name and dropped “Jedha” after the title. We suppose we all know who she is and where she’s from at this point. All of the previously released characters from The Black Series [Phase III] line have the latest technology, including repainted portraits, reflecting superior screen accuracy. If you recall, Hasbro did the same thing for the Star Wars Rebels characters and released Zeb as the new figure of the group. We like this way of thinking, and it gives Hasbro a chance to correct the dreadful facial operations these figures had on their original releases. And while many of the figures in the Rogue One collection were terrible peg-warmers, it’s still nice to see these characters again in The Black Series [Phase IV] line, but looking refreshed. Supply chain issues are wreaking havoc on how and when these figures are arriving, but we’re getting them in dribs and drabs, which seems to be working out fine.

Jyn Erso is the main character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Initially, this figure was the first The Black Series 6-inch figure collectors got to add to their collections in the form of a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. This release is the third time Hasbro added Jyn Erso to the 6-inch line, and the best version of the on-screen character is now part of The Black Series [Phase IV] line. And admittedly, Jyn Erso hasn’t looked better. Jyn Erso has a dynamic sculpt loaded with an excessive amount of detail. The action figure’s frame is athletically feminine, but the construction of the ball-jointed hips makes it appear too wide in the caboose. The actress doesn’t seem as “hippy” in the film. This approach is problematic because squeezing hyper articulation into thinly framed characters doesn’t always work well. The wideness in the hips also lends towards a bowed leg aesthetic which, in all honesty, is a disappointment. A fine young woman in her prime shouldn’t look as if she is suffering from some mild form of rickets. But maybe Hasbro isn’t entirely at fault here. The packaging seems to have affected the figure’s aesthetics a bit. Again, this character’s essential pieces seem to be in place here, plus or minus a few problems. But it’s the final execution that leaves something to be desired. Jyn Erso looks excellent, and we’re nitpicking here. But we’re also holding Hasbro accountable for their claims that these are collectors’ items, and quite frankly, collectors demand the finest quality possible.

We must comment on how excellent the figure’s likeness is. If you recall, the original release, Sergeant Jyn Erso, looks like something from the Disney Princess line. The original release came with jarring teardrop-shaped eyes. And additionally, Hasbro added heavy mascara to outline the corners of the eyes. And to top it off, they gave the figure a whimsical, wide-eyed appearance. Jyn Erso is a “bad” chick in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and takes on the Galactic Empire. The figure needed as realistic of a likeness as possible, and we now have that here with this release. Jyn Erso has a wealth of washes on the included (and removable) vest and a few on the holster. Thankfully, the rest of Jyn Erso is nice. The figure comes loaded with articulation. We like the included gun and the holster. Its functionality is excellent. Jyn Erso also comes with a removable and molded gray head covering. It’s reminiscent of something you may have seen Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Princess Leia Organa wear during the sandstorm in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi deleted scenes. We learn it’s merely a disguise for Jyn. Jyn Erso attains many poses, but some of the joints are still too rubbery. It affects the figure and prevents ease when posing it in action-oriented positions. Unfortunately, Jyn also has great difficulty standing at attention unassisted. We’re confident you’ll be impressed with the new Photo Real face update. The figure’s skin appears a bit too yellow and jaundiced, but we’ll stay optimistic about it because the Photo Real update looks so good.
