The Carbonized Collection Moff Gideon figure has been treated with a sleek metallic finish down to the finest detail.

We feel that unmasked human characters do not translate well in the “carbonized” format. This novel approach didn’t work too well for Cara Dune, and it equally doesn’t work well for Moff Gideon. Then again, many collectors also feel that the “carbonized” line of 3.75-inch action figures from The Vintage Collection don’t need this representation at all. Moff Gideon is The Mandalorian’s “Darth Vader.” The costume is reminiscent in that it looks like it’s part Darth Vader and then part Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot. Hasbro faithfully recreated the outfit and character in a 3.75” super-articulated scale. But most importantly, Hasbro tooled a portrait that might be the greatest-looking human portrait we can ever remember. And it doesn’t look too bad “carbonized” either. The original TVC Moff Gideon (VC180) figure is a highlight in The Vintage Collection. It will hold up remarkably well for years. It’s easily one of the best-looking action figures in recent memory. For years, Hasbro has had great difficulty with human portraits, and no matter how close they come, they seem too far off compared to screen accuracy.

The same cannot be said of Moff Gideon (Carbonized). The portrait, in this scale no less, is a dead ringer for actor Giancarlo Esposito. If you inspect the action figure from various angles, you see how closely Hasbro nailed the actor’s likeness. This little action figure looks like the actor from top to bottom. Moff Gideon (Carbonized) comes with the standard articulation that all of the new The Vintage Collection figures comes with, including swivel thighs. We get easily frustrated with the swivel thighs because they’re pretty loose and interfere with the ball-jointed hips. You’ll find that the legs slip out from under you when you try to pose the figure ins some action-oriented poses. Aside from this minor setback, we’re quite impressed with the articulation given to this action figure because you can achieve a wealth of poses or have the figure standing at attention all with relative ease. We are confident you’ll agree with our assessment here. But whether you want the exact figure with a different glimmery paint job is a different topic. There seem to be too many novelty figures in the Hasbro Star Wars line these days.

Hasbro accessorized Moff Gideon (Carbonized) nicely. The figure comes with a molded and removable cape. The outer portion of the cape is black, while the lining is deep-blood red. There is a small hole in the back of the Moff Gideon (Carbonized) action figure and a plug on the cape’s back. The cape stays in place nicely, whether you pose the figure statically or have it some action pose. Hasbro also tooled a functioning holster on the right side of Moff Gideon’s belt. The figure comes with a small blaster pistol, and it stays in place firmly when not in use. Moff Gideon (Carbonized)’s right hand also accommodates the blaster pistol perfectly. Finally, the figure also comes with a darksaber sword. It’s delicately designed, and unfortunately, Hasbro cast it in a plastic that’s too pliable for our liking. But Moff Gideon (Carbonized) can hold it with both hands and looks excellent wielding it. This latest Star Wars villain is quite popular already. Over time, we anticipate that Moff Gideon will continue to grow an audience that appreciates the character and wants more collectibles and action figures based on him. But releasing this figure with a “carbonized” paint job is not something any of us wanted.
